Hi guys,

My computer got infected with something. I dunno what it is exactly. My Microsoft Antispyware software picked up on something called R-Bot which it got rid of. However, that didn't solve the pop ups I was getting. I noticed that I now have something called toolbar888 which I didn't consciously install. After doing a search on line, I found this site:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/44559/toolbar888/

and followed the instructions. Everything went as expected and i'm still waiting to see if the problem has been solved. However, I noticed that toolbar888 was still installed. What should I do? Uninstall it? Here is the log that Look-2-Me spat out (yeah, it was surprisingly short):

Look2Me-Destroyer V1.0.12

Scanning for infected files.....
Scan started at 9/15/2006 9:52:06 PM

Attempting to delete infected files...

Making registry repairs.

Restoring Windows certificates.

Replaced hosts file with default windows hosts file

Restoring SeDebugPrivilege for Administrators - Succeeded

EDIT::: okay, i just found out, it didn't work. I'm still getting popups. Help! Can i just do a system restore to an earlier point? Thanks!

Hi KOC

Thank you for you reply. I did the stuff in that link you sent. Adaware found 14 things, but on restart, it was still 14. So I opted to continue on with the rest of the stuff on that site. Oh yeah, Spybot says I have "Avenue A." Here is the HackThis logfile:

Hi rudiger533 sorry for the delay

We need to disable your Windows Defender Real-time Protection as it may interfere with the fixes that we need to make.

Open Windows Defender.
Click on Tools, General Settings.
Scroll down and uncheck Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
After you uncheck this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.

Reboot

Please download VundoFix.exe
to your desktop.
  • Double-click VundoFix.exe to run it.
  • Click the Scan for Vundo button.
  • Once it's done scanning, click the Remove Vundo button.
  • You will receive a prompt asking if you want to remove the files, click YES
  • Once you click yes, your desktop will go blank as it starts removing Vundo.
  • When completed, it will prompt that it will reboot your computer, click OK.
  • Please post the contents of C:\vundofix.txt and a new HiJackThis log.
Note: It is possible that VundoFix encountered a file it could not remove.
In this case, VundoFix will run on reboot, simply follow the above
instructions starting from "Click the Scan for Vundo button." when
VundoFix appears at reboot.

After Reboot please do this:

Please run hijackthis and place a check next to these entries:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {E7E6DE9F-608A-43FB-8316-41C23F9B8069} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\ddccb.dll (file missing)
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Alcmtr] ALCMTR.EXE

Please close all windows and browsers except Hijackthis and click "Fix Checked"

Reboot

Please open Hijackthis and do this:

1) Click on "Open the Misc Tools section"
2) Click on "Open Uinstall Manager..."
3) Click on "Save list..."
4) Save the list on your desktop and copy the list in here.

Now Please click "Start > Run" and type in "msconfig"
Select "Normal Startup" and hit OK.
(This will ensure that anything that might be hidden in your HijackThis log will now be visible.)
Reboot the computer and post a new HijackThis log and the log from VundoFix and the save list.

Lets enable your protection software again:

Open Windows Defender.
Click on Tools, General Settings.
Scroll down and Check Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
After you Check this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.

:flowers:

Great, thanks, I will give that a try. Note that I have tried VundoFix already, albeit with windows defender on.

Yeah, I'll post all the logs when I have some free time later in the day (so check up on me again ;D). I appreciate all the help you've given so far.

So wait, do I run vundofix and hijackthis again and post the new logs and savelist?

Lets enable your protection software again:

Open Windows Defender.
Click on Tools, General Settings.
Scroll down and Check Turn on real-time protection (recommended).
After you Check this, click on the Save button and close Windows Defender.
