Spam, most likely.   Spam absolutely if it doesn't come from someone who's address you know, and still most likely even if it does since address spoofing is common practice among spammers.

 

That, or someone's pasted something that is non-text, e.g. a picture, file in some way that it is being interpreted as text, which will produce utter gibberish.

 

In any case, depending on whether you believe it to actually be spam or not, you'd want to contact the sender if you believe the message is not spoofed spam and you know them to determine what it is they were trying to send you.

Thanks britechguy- I thought something was wrong with my email client. I use Thunderbird. I get these from time to time, sometimes from solicited email and sometimes not- thanks for the heads up!
