I've just tried the drag and drop option and it works fine. Find the extension you want to download and right click on the install button , choose "save link as" and save it to your desktop . Now open firefox and click on tools then extensions. Now go to your desktop and drag the extension file over the extension link in your taskbar. When the window opens drop the file into the extension box and click install. Hopefully that will be you done.

Glad you got your extension issue sorted out AMD010! This seems to be an ongoing problem with FFox updates.
You may want to have a look at the extension called FEBE. This "Firefox Extension Backup Extension" allows you to backup your extensions, themes and (optionally) your bookmarks, passwords and just about everything else Firefox has to offer.
