Hello, in need of some help. I have Windows 8. When I have a window open, if I click on something or highlight, a new window will open, to an adult game or a porn site.

I have run adwcleaner and cleaned out what it let me. I noticed one of the things listed was a trojan. I also downloaded Malwarebytes and it will not start.

I have tried to download AVG as well, and it is unable to install. I also tried to defragment, but it sat all day and only did 2%

Thank you for any help or suggestions!

Try RKill then MBAM.

Please download Rkill by Grinler and save it to your desktop.
  • Link 1
  • Link 2
    • Double-click on the Rkill desktop icon to run the tool.
    • If using Vista/Windows7, right-click on it and Run As Administrator.
    • A black DOS box will briefly flash and then disappear. This is normal and indicates the tool ran successfully.
    • If not, delete the file, then download and use the one provided in Link 2.
    • If it does not work, repeat the process and attempt to use one of the remaining links until the tool runs.
    • If the tool does not run from any of the links provided, please let me know.
  • Do not reboot the computer, you will need to run the application again.

I ran the RKill and then I ran MBam, and it still says cannot connect to service.

To complement Boopme's solution, you can also try booting into Windows "Safe mode with networking" and try your luck there. Fresh and raw Windows boot does wonder.

Still won't work. And I can't figure out how to do it in safe mode, tried it twice now.

I know it has been an entire weekend. Was concerned whether you managed to solve the issue or not? Any success booting into safe mode? Are the issues still present?

A similar problem appeared on my laptop on Sat. All of a sudden I noticed my system would wake up out of sleep mode sproadically. I tried to run Malwarebytes and it wouldn't execute. After repeated removals and reinstalls I got the same results.I compared all folders and files against my other system and MB seemed to be installed correctly but it didn't execute. After reading a bunch of items of similar problems I tried this:

* copied the Malware folder to a new one (TestMB)

* renamed the application (MBAM.EXE) ot TestMB.exe in the TestMB folder.

* executed TestMB

It came up and I started the scan. I found 11 adware infections and 3 rootkit viruses. I got rid of them and now all is well with Malwarebytes (using the base install).

Sorry I haven't been back, got super busy lately. Thank you for not locking this thread.

I have tried making a copy and renaming it, that didn't work.

I'll try it in safe mode today. Thanks for helping.

If Installed
  • Note: If Malwarebytes will not launch please do the following to launch Malwarebytes Chameleon:
  • Press the Windows Key + E at the same time
  • Navigate to and double click the C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes Anti-Malware\Chameleon folder
  • Double click one of the four following files (if one does not work try the next one, and so on) - A black command window will open. Follow those instructions until the Malwarebytes program starts the scan

mbam-chameleon.scr
mbam-chameleon
mbam-chameleon.exe
mbam-chameleon.com
