Mod Edit:  Split from https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/647816/disk-defragmenter-wont-defrag-no-matter-what/ - Hamluis.

I need help with that too. If you don't mind please. Only mine won't run disk defragment, because of task manager I think. It says some file is corrupted.

Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:
List last 10 Event Viewer log
  List Installed Programs
List Users, Partitions and Memory size.

Click Go and paste the content into your next post.

Also...please Publish a Snapshot using Speccy taking care to post the link of the snapshot in your next post.

Go to Piriform's website, and download the free version on the left.  Click Download from Piriform.com (the FileHippo link requires an extra click). Or if you want to use a portable version of Speccy (which doesn't require installation), click the builds page link and download the portable version. You will now be asked where you want to save the file. The best place to put it is the Desktop, as it will be easy to find later.

After the file finishes downloading, you are ready to run Speccy. If you downloaded the installer, simply double-click on it and follow the prompts until installation is complete. If you downloaded the portable version, you will need to unzip it before use. Right-click the ZIP file and click Extract all. Click Next. Open up the extracted folder and double-click on Speccy.

Once inside Speccy, it will look similar to this (with your computer's specifications, of course):

post-33068-0-86653600-1480692866_thumb.j

Now, at the top, click File > Publish Snapshot.

Click Yes > then Copy to Clipboard

Now, once you are back in the forum topic you are posting in, click the ADD REPLY or REPLY TO THIS TOPIC button. Right-click in the empty space of the Reply box and click Paste. Then, click Add Reply below the Reply box.

Ok, first off just to let you know I won't be replying again until tomorrow, and secondly I have a question. Could you please explain to me what snapshot is, and how to do it on my computer? I might already know how, and just not know what it's called😂😂.

Please do the following.

Please run sfc /scannow.

The sfc /scannow command scans all protected system files and replaces corrupted and incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions.

Important:  There will be a short message at the end of the scan informing you of the results.  If you receive the message "no integrity violations were found" you don't need to do anything else, no corrupt files were found.  You should watch the scan to see the results at the end of the scan.

1. Click on the Start orb, then type cmd in the Search box.

2. CMD will appear above the search box, right click on it and select Run as administrator.

3.When the Elevated Command Prompt opens copy and paste the command below, then press Enter.

sfc /scannow

This will start the scan.  Please allow the scan to complete.  Stopping it could damage files.

4.To find the sfc /scannow log open the start menu and click on Computer.

5. Click on the drive letter Windows 7 is installed on.  This usually is the C: drive.

6. Clik on Windows, then [Logs[/b], then CBS.

This log usually is very large, for this reason you should use a host website like Dropbox to post the log.  You can start a free 30 day trial.  Once you have loaded the log at Dropbox post a link to the website.

Hamluis, should I do what dc3 suggested?

I'm not trying to be rude to dc3. I just want to stick with one person, so there won't be to many cooks in the kitchen.

Sorry, dc3.

P.S. Whoever posted right after I did last night, thank-you.

Of course, you should.  Dc3 has training and experience that I don't have...he is much more knowledgeable regarding computer problems than I could hope to be.

Do you have the installation disc for this version of Windows 7?

Family and loved ones will always be a priority in my daily life.  You never know when one will leave you.

dc3, I think I do. If by installation disk you mean the disk that came with the computer.

I should have asked this previously, but there's no time like the present.

What is the make and model of this computer?

Either a recovery disc or installation disc/USB device you can run the Startup Repair.

Repair Installation Instructions

Attention:  In order to boot from the installation disc you may need to change the boot order in the BIOS so that the optical driver is the first device in the boot order, and the HDD/SSD is the second devcice.

1.  Place the installation disc in the tray of the CD/DVD drive, close the tray and restart the computer.

2.  You will be prompted to press any key to start the installation, do so.

At this point the setup process will load files, this will take several minutes.

3.  You will now need to choose the  Language, Time and currency format, and Keyboard or input method that you'd like to use.

After this is done click on Next.

4.  Click on the Repair your computer link at the bottom-left of the Install Windows window.

This will open the Windows 7 System Recovery Options.

5.  System Recovery Options will now search your hard drive(s) for any Windows 7 installations.  This will take several minutes.

No participation is required on your part at this time, wait till it has finished and the next window opens.

6.  Choose the Windows 7 installation that you'd like to perform the Startup Repair on, then click on Next

7.  Click on the Startup Repair link from list of recovery tools in System Recovery Options.

8.  The Startup Repair tool will now search for problems in the system files.

If Startup Repair finds a problem with any system files the tool may suggest a solution which you will need to confirm, or may solve the problem automatically.

9.  Startup Repair will now attempt to repair whatever problems it found with system files.

Note:  If Startup Repair did not find any problems with system files you won't see this step.

Important: Your computer may or may not restart several times during this repair process.  This is normal, you should allow it to continue until you see the Restart your computer to complete the repairs window.

10.  Click on Finish, this will restart your computer.

It is possible that the Startup Repair will not be able to fix the problem.  If the Startup Repair tool determines this, it may automatically run the the repair after your computer restarts.  If it does not automatically run the repair but you are still having problems with Windows 7 repeat these steps to run Startup Repair again manually.

Family and loved ones will always be a priority in my daily life.  You never know when one will leave you.

You should better describe what the problem is and why you think it has something to do with Task Manager.

If you mean Task Scheduler perhaps this will help:

If you mean you are seeing something like this:

[attachment=196947:1.png]

Has the system ever been upgraded to Windows 10 and then reverted back to Windows 7?

Do you now or have you ever had a third party defragmentation application installed?

Windows 7 comes with a Scheduled Task to defragment all volumes every Wednesday at 1:00AM.

If you have installed some third party application that includes it's own defrag or other kind of maintenance operations it may have disabled the built in Windows 7 task.

If you have disabled the built in Windows 7 task yourself you will see that message when you attempt to open defrag (non believers try it).

If your system was upgraded to Windows 10 and then reverted back to Windows 7 it could be that all your Windows Scheduled Tasks are corrupted - sometimes it happens.

If the task has been disabled and you click the Remove settings button that should enable the task again and (after a moment) you should see:

Something you have installed could prevent or override that setting though.

Click the Start button/orb and in the box enter:

Task Scheduler

Choose to Run as administrator:

If Task Scheduler opens with lots of complaining about corrupted tasks that is a symptom of a botched Windows 7 to Windows 10 back to Windows 7 reversion and is a different problem (sometimes fixable).

If Task Scheduler opens fine check the Defrag task to see if it has been Disabled.

When you look in Task Scheduler you should see the task and be sure the Status column says Ready and not Disabled:

If the task is Disabled, right click and Enable it then see how things look.
