I'm a new member to this forum and have tried to follow the rules to post my problem.  This laptop is around 5 years old.  I love it, but a computer tech said my speakers are "blown" (are they easy to replace?), and thingsare slowing down.  If I roll dice in a computer program, sometimes it takes 4 seconds or so, but usually 1-1.5 seconds. Never immediate.  I used to get BSODs with all kinds of different messages every few days.  Now it's about once every 2 weeks.

Here is a link to my Speccy snapshot:

http://speccy.piriform.com/results/BHBnGjDdK0SFLQiJDWG2whO

Had to move my zipped file to keep it from opening.  Hope that is how to do it.

Hi,

First of all, volume E: has gone kaput:

Event[1]:
  Log Name: System
  Source: Ntfs
  Date: 2017-08-07T15:16:39.328
  Event ID: 55
  Task: N/A
  Level: Error
  Opcode: N/A
  Keyword: Classic
  User: N/A
  User Name: N/A
  Computer: PC-Owner-HP
  Description:
The file system structure on the disk is corrupt and unusable. Please run the chkdsk utility on the volume E:.
I would backup any data on it (and then run SeaTools as instructed below).

There are 50 dumps in the uploaded reports, and I have no time to look through all of them (the ones I've looked through seem pretty inconclusive). But looking at the nature of the system, it's fair to say that it's most likely hardware-related. Let's start off with these two essential hardware diagnostics:

MemTest86 — run it for EIGHT passes at least
Seagate SeaTools for Windows — test ALL your hard drives with the S.M.A.R.T. and Long Generic tests.

Regards,
bwv848

p.s. Your CPU is extremely hot at 70°C. I recommend blowing any dust out of the fans with compressed air.

Looks like there's a learning curve for Memtest86.  Am I making a bootable CD or a bootable USB.  Do I make 8 of them?

As for the E drive, I have no idea what that is and I never use it.

Make a bootable CD. No need to make 8. Just run it for eight passes (until it says eight under the passes indicator).

I haven't made a CD in at least 10 years and have none in my house.  I'll try to borrow one from my daughter.

If you don't have a CD on hand, you may use a USB too. I just suggested a CD because it's usually easier—using a USB sometimes requires messing around in the BIOS.

If by USB you mean a flash drive, that would be easier for me.

Yes, I meant a USB flash drive. BTW, if you have trouble, here's another guide (which may be clearer for you):

https://www.sysnative.com/forums/hardware-tutorials/3909-test-ram-memtest86.html

It asks you to run MemTest86+ not MemTest86. Either works fine, because you're not running a UEFI system.

I tried to run the program, but I have no idea what drive goes in step 1 and step 3 if they can't match.  "I" is my flash drive.

I was following your link at https://www.sysnative.com/forums/hardware-tutorials/3909-test-ram-memtest86.html

but after it installed on my flash drive I don't see an IMG file.  And I was hoping I wouldn't have to mess with my memory sticks.

Hi,

Very sorry, but I can't quite understand you. Can you copy and paste the part that you don't understand?

BTW, feel free to run SeaTools first, if you'd like to.

Downloaded Seatools and ran both the S.M.A.R.T. and Long Generic tests for both my C drive and my F drive.  Both passed.

Went into BIOS to get my laptop to boot off the smart drive.  Wasn't sure which selection was for a flash drive, since they probably didn't exist when the BIOS was written.

Saw a memory test and ran it (about 45 minutes).  That passed.  Where do I stand now?

Sorry, but you were supposed to run it for 7-10 passes, not one pass. Please follow the Sysnative guide carefully.
