Hello,

Thank you in advance for anyone who is able to help with this!

My computer was hacked into by someone who I thought I could trust. My passwords were stolen, and accounts were broken into. I'm worried that my computer is being remotely accessed as well. I need help with finding and removing any virus/malware/rootkits etc on my laptop.

Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

If this "hacker" had physical access to the computer and you are absolutely sure personal and financial info was stolen...you should

report this to the police.

If you are not going to report this to the police then I suggest you backup  important data and reinstall your OS and programs. That

will give you complete peace of mind as to whether the computer is compromised or not.

Agreed with Buddy, if you have physical proof of evidence that someone did hack into your PC. You can't really do much, malware removal here won't really help with the recovery that much. Sure, you can do the standard Malwarebytes, HitmanPro and Anti-virus scan combo, but what you need right now is to seek for your data. Changing passwords, pins, calling companies that have access to your finances informing the of theft.

Thanks for the advice so far. I have changed my passwords and have informed my financial institutions. I do have much evidence of the hacking that occurred. I already went to the police and made a report. They told me that what he did was an invasion of privacy and data theft. For personal reasons, I for now won't be continuing in the police investigation.

I would like some guidance with the various scans, in order to find and remove any virus/malware/trojans etc.

Thanks for your help!

If he had physical access to the computer...he wouldn't need to have used any program to find your passwords. But you can use the programs

below to clean, remove malware and remove adware.

Use CCleaner to remove Temporary files, program caches, cookies, logs, etc. Use the Default settings. No need to use the

Registry Cleaning Tool...risky. Pay close attention while installing and UNcheck offers of toolbars....especially Google.

After install, open CCleaner and run by clicking on the Run Cleaner button in the bottom right corner.

CCleaner - PC Optimization and Cleaning - Free Download

Malwarebytes - Clean Mode

  • Download and install the free version of Malwarebytes
Note: If you have Malwarebytes already installed, you don't need to install it again. Simply start from the next bullet point
  • Once Malwarebytes is installed, launch it and let it update his database. You might have to click on the little arrow by Scan Status in the middle right pane for it to do so
  • Once the database update is complete, click on the Scan tab, then select the Threat Scan button and click on Start Scan
  • Let the scan run, the time required to complete the scan depends of your system and computer specs
  • Once the scan is complete, make sure that the first checkbox at the top is checked (which will automatically check every detected item), then click on the Quarantine Selected button
    • If it asks you to restart your computer to complete the removal, do so
  • Click on Export Summary after the deletion (in the bottom-left corner) and select Copy to Clipboard. Paste the content in your next reply

If you are unable to run a scan using MBAM:

Follow the instructions in the thread below. Make sure to download the MBAR linked in it. Let me know if you're not able to launch it and run a scan.
https://forums.malwarebytes.com/topic/198907-requested-resource-is-in-use-error-unable-to-start-malwarebytes/

Download AdwCleaner by Xplode onto your desktop.

  • Close all open programs and internet browsers.
  • Double click on adwcleaner.exe to run the tool.
  • Click on Scan button.
  • When the scan has finished click on Clean button.
  • Your computer will be rebooted automatically. A text file will open after the restart.
  • Please post the contents of that logfile with your next reply.
  • You can find the logfile at C:\AdwCleaner[S1].txt as well.
  • download Junkware Removal Tool to your desktop.
  • Shut down your protection software now to avoid potential conflicts.
  • Run the tool by double-clicking it. If you are using Windows Vista, 7, or 8; instead of double-clicking, right-mouse click JRT.exe and select "Run as Administrator".
  • The tool will open and start scanning your system.
  • Please be patient as this can take a while to complete depending on your system's specifications.
  • On completion, a log (JRT.txt) is saved to your desktop and will automatically open.
  • Post the contents of JRT.txt into your next message

Uninstall these programs:

TunnelBear v.3.0.34.0 Warning! This app can show ads.

WildTangent Games v.1.0.4.0

Update Installer for WildTangent Games App

WildTangent Games App v.4.0.11.16

Decide on which antivirus you want to run/ keep. Either update and activate AVG or uninstall it.

Update Firefox to get the latest security updates for it.

You can block third party cookies from installing. Those are the ad/ tracking cookies. Once you have blocked them from

installing, use CCleaner to remove the existing ones.

How to disable third-party cookies in all major web browsers

If you don't have an ad blocker installed I suggest using Adblock Plus. Once installed click on the ABP icon at the top of your

browsers and choose Filter Preferences. Then UNcheck the box next to Allow some non-intrusive advertisements.

Adblock Plus - Chrome Web Store   Adblock Plus :: Add-ons for Firefox   Adblock Plus for Edge browser   Adblock Plus for IE

Hello BC Advisor,

I have completed the above steps. Thank you. When my computer was first infected, I was advised to run an ESET scan (legitimate ESET program was used). 88 threats were found. These are some of the results from the ESET scan. It appears that there is a virus in my phone. My phone started acting up after the incident - ie. battery died quickly, couldn't hold a charge for long, apps would shut down on their own. Is it possible that the hacker was able to infect my phone with a virus, even though he only had physical access to my laptop? He never had access to my phone. Here are some of the entries which lead me to believe that my phone was infected:

I suggest you reset your smart phone to default settings if you haven't done that.

Run another scan using Eset Online Scanner.

Download and run the FREE online scanner from Free Virus Scan | Online Virus Scan from ESET | ESET

  • Place a checkmark in YES, I accept the Terms of Use, then click Start. Wait for ESET Online Scanner to load its components.
  • Select Enable detection of potentially unwanted applications.
  • Click Advanced Settings, then place a checkmark in the following:
    • Remove found threats
    • Scan archives
    • Scan for potentially unsafe applications
    • Enable Anti-Stealth technology
  • Click Start to begin scanning.
  • ESET Online Scanner will start downloading signatures and scan. Please be patient, as this scan can take quite some time.
  • When the scan is done, click List threats (only available if ESET Online Scanner found something).
  • Click Export, then save the file to your desktop.
  • Click Back
  • Allow Eset to delete/ quarantine whatever it finds.
