where did the Product Key come from initially?

if you upgraded to WIn10 using that Win7 key, then Yes.

Instead of reading this, why not do a backup of your PC.

You won't regret it.

You can activate Windows 10 using windows 7 genuine key, but not vice versa.

But usually this does not need to be done, the genuine ticket method and/or the Windows digital license which is associated with your Microsoft account are used.
