Recently I came across this fancy picture denoting development of ransomware. Maybe moders pinpoint this stuff for the sake of detection of old ransomware threats

Good stuff, but there was no full outline with sufficiently long timeline as mine  :) Heimdal one is more detailed, but it lists threats only since 2012.

Although ransomware has been around for many years, the original CryptoLocker which appeared in the beginning of September 2013 gave it widespread media attention because it demonstrated how these infections could generate a large amount of revenue for their creators.
