System:  Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit

This is a new problem. I plug in a USB drive into any of my 3 USB 2.0 sockets. The drive does NOT show up in Windows Explorer. Yet I can launch Windows Explorer, type "E:" in the address bar and CAN access the USB drive without any problems. I can read / write to the USB - no problem. In disk management there is a drive letter assigned to the USB. I tried this with several USB drives - same behavior. So I can access the USB drive, there is a drive letter assigned to the drive, but the drive letter does not display in Windows Explorer.

Note that I tried the solutions at the following site but the problem still exists.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/help/330140/my-drive-does-not-appear-in-windows-explorer-view

Solution anyone?

Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:
List last 10 Event Viewer log
  List Installed Programs
List Users, Partitions and Memory size.

Click Go and paste the content into your next post.

Also...please Publish a Snapshot using Speccy taking care to post the link of the snapshot in your next post.

Go to Piriform's website, and download the free version on the left.  Click Download from Piriform.com (the FileHippo link requires an extra click). Or if you want to use a portable version of Speccy (which doesn't require installation), click the builds page link and download the portable version. You will now be asked where you want to save the file. The best place to put it is the Desktop, as it will be easy to find later.

After the file finishes downloading, you are ready to run Speccy. If you downloaded the installer, simply double-click on it and follow the prompts until installation is complete. If you downloaded the portable version, you will need to unzip it before use. Right-click the ZIP file and click Extract all. Click Next. Open up the extracted folder and double-click on Speccy.

Once inside Speccy, it will look similar to this (with your computer's specifications, of course):

post-33068-0-86653600-1480692866_thumb.j

Now, at the top, click File > Publish Snapshot.

Click Yes > then Copy to Clipboard

Now, once you are back in the forum topic you are posting in, click the ADD REPLY or REPLY TO THIS TOPIC button. Right-click in the empty space of the Reply box and click Paste. Then, click Add Reply below the Reply box.

It may be that AutoPlay is not functioning. Download the enable Autoplay registry key and import it. This is not AutoRun which is entirely different.

I see one SSD (C:) and 1 465GB My Passport USB drive (F:).

How many drives are currently connected?  Who is the manufacturer and what is the size of each?  Are all connected drives reflected in Device Manager?

Laptop appears to be 7 years old, with Windows install dating to Jun 2016.

At the time I ran Speccy, there was one external hard drive connected to a USB 2.0 port. Note that I have 3 different external hard drives that I use and that this problem occurs with all 3. The manufacturers are Western Digital & Seagate. All external drives exhibit the same behavior. When I connect then one at a time, they show up in the device manager with drive letter  'E'. I can read & write to each drive without a problem. In fact, I use the drives for backup & was able this afternoon to successfully run my backup software.

One other observation. Here is an experiment I tried. I connected one of the external drives. When I change its drive letter to 'G' or higher in the alphabet, the drive DOES appear in Windows Explorer view. But when the drive's drive letter is 'E' or 'F', the drive does NOT appear in Windows Explorer view. I don't know how to evaluate this additional piece of data.

I purchased the laptop in Feb 2011. In 2016, I had a SSD installed and Windows 7 reinstalled.

Hope this helps.

Thank you.

Ordinarily, you cannot have two different USB drives...with the same letter designation...Windows will only see one of them.

This phenomenon only occurs with USB devices...if drives are directly connected to the motherboard, the system automatically just assigns the next letter unused by drives already connected.

But, I find that this can be overcome through more work than I would ever consider, see HERE.

I give each of my partitions/drives a different letter, working my way backwards through the alphabet, thus avoiding possible confusion.  The C: partition/drive will always be the Windows install booted into.

Please try this and see if it helps. Click start, type CMD, at the command prompt type attrib -h -r -s /s /d E:\*.* This should make it show up.

Entered the command in command prompt - never returned, just sat there.

Interesting, you did say that it shows up if you change the drive letter? Maybe I misunderstood the purpose of the post. You are wondering why that is?

The drive letters permanently assigned on the laptop are 'C' for the internal hard drive and 'D' for the CD/DVD drive. When I plug in an external hard drive, it will be assigned by Windows the drive letter 'E'. But when I open Windows Explorer, E is not shown. I can type E: in Explorer's address bar to access the hard drive but even then the E drive does not display in the left pane of Explorer.  Very weird.

I think I will eventually wipe the hard drive and reinstall Windows 7.

Any other thoughts?

Do you have a restore point before the problem occurred? If not then backup your important data first and do chkdsk /r

Next would be sfc /scannow at a command prompt.

I am not sure the following will work as the letter does show up in Disk Management. Try deleting all non-present devices using Device Cleanup CMD.  Read the readme file in the zip file. It may be easier to copy the X64 subfolder to the root of C:\.

Open an elevated command prompt and type:

cd C:\X64
devicecleanupcmd *

After doing this any flash drive or external drive attached will have it's driver reinstalled. Perhaps there was a conflict between previous devices using those two letters. At least it's worth a try before doing a reinstall.

There is also a GUI version.
