When browsing the screen froze and I received a message saying that I had visited an illicit site and that I should call a phone no to avoid problems.

I called and a person claiming to be working for Microsoft said they could help me for a fee.   I refused and logged off;   After that my PC won't accept my psw.   My Security provider Bitdefender can't/won't help me.

What can I do to regain my PC?

EC,

Since, by your very description, this is the likely result of an infection I am going to escort you and your post to the appropriate forum.  It won't get the necessary "eyes on" in Windows 10 Discussion.

Welcome to BC....

What is psw?

Are you able to run Bit Defender scan and update it?

buddy215,

I read 'psw' as password, even though I typically shorthand same as 'pwd'.  I hope the OP replies.

Ah ha....I never shorten password....can't say I've even seen that before... thanks.

Likely the criminal did that intentionally. I recall that happening a few times several years back. I'm going to ask

one of the malware team to assist. As I recall it is a simple registry fix used to unblock the password.

ecar65...start a new topic in the malware removal forum. Be sure to mention that you can't create the FRST logs because you are unable

to boot into Windows.

Please follow the instructions in the Malware Removal and Log Section Preparation Guide starting at Step 6.

  • If you cannot complete a step, then skip it and continue with the next.
  • In Step 6 there are instructions for downloading and running FRST which will create two logs.

When you have done that, post your logs in the Virus, Trojan, Spyware, and Malware Removal Logs forum, NOT here, for assistance by the Malware Response Team.

Start a new topic, give it a relevant title and post your log(s) along with a brief description of your problem, a summary of any anti-malware tools you have used and a summary of any steps that you have performed on your own. If you cannot produce any of the required logs...start the new topic anyway. Explain that you followed the Prep. Guide, were unable to create the logs, and describe what happened when you tried to create them. A member of the Malware Removal Team will walk you through, step by step, on how to clean your computer.

After doing this, please reply back in this thread with a link to the new topic so we can close this one.

DO NOT bump your new topic. Wait for a response from one of the Team Members.
