hi,

Desktop hangs on User profile - won't load any further, happened since it was just turned off rather than shut down.

System;

Windows 7 Professional SP1

Intel R Pentium R CPU G840 @ 2.8Ghz 2.79Ghz

8GB ram

64bit

Zoostorm desktop PC

:

will not always boot in safe mode, but when it does I have managed to change the picture in the User icon, doesnt help with normal boot.

managed to boot safe mode with prompt and access registry (regedit) : shows what appears to be four users - none of which are me !

ran malwarebytes in safemode - found nothing, no change

no system restore point (slap wrist)

windows explorer often crashes in safe mode

Device manager doesnt show any red/yellow highlighted entries

Grateful if anyone can advise or point me in the right direction

kind regards

Just a thought. See if you can select "Last Known Good Configuration".

I assume this also happens if you create a new account in Safe Mode?

I cant see how to create new user in safe mode, so i.ve tried Safe Mode with command prompt, but i.m currently on 12th attempt and pc hangs on the welcome screen then just restarts.(once I got a Windows encountered critical error just before restart)

Before going any further I would recommend you pull any important data off the drive using a live linux disk or by removing the HDD and attaching it to another computer with a USB adapter similar to this one.

update: 13th attempt command prompt didn't crash, followed the instructions here

https://www.pcrisk.com/computer-technician-blog/general-information/7019-how-to-create-a-new-user-account-using-command-prompt

and managed to create a new user

ran Malwarebytes again - still nothing

wouldnt let me switch to my user account so restarted

new error: Failed to connect to the System Event notification service, followed by crash

restarted and booted new user successfully

theres not a huge amount of important data to retrieve, maybe a few emails that i hadnt read.  itunes library safe on an external drive

it's just a pain that all my settings were just so

do i give up on my old user profile or should i be worried that theres something more sinister lurking in the pc somewhere?

Taking 13 attempts to boot sounds more like a hardware problem.

You can try doing a chkdsk /r at the command prompt but on a computer with severe file system corruption it could make things worse. Do you have an install DVD of Windows 7 or is there a sticker on the side of the computer with a legible key?

microsoft has a fix for this specifically:

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/947215/you-receive-a-the-user-profile-service-failed-the-logon-error-message

i've had to use it several times and it's worked everytime using method 1
