I've been trying to track down this issue for months now. For a while, what was happening was I would turn on my computer and it would freeze within maybe 5 minutes of it booting up, but not always at exactly the same time. If it didn't freeze after about 5 minutes, I could run everything no problem and I had uptimes of almost a month until I rebooted to install updates, at which point I'd have to keep power cycling until it finally didn't freeze. I would often (but not always) get a BSOD after it froze, but then the core dump would never complete, so I never got a minidump.

In an attempt to fix this, I installed a new motherboard and a new SSD with a fresh Windows install. I'm seeing a variant on my original problem. I can boot into windows reliably, but now it will freeze after an hour or so. Again, the timing is unpredictable. I'm not getting a BSOD, so I still don't have a minidump.

*Update: Literally 30 seconds after I posted this, it froze and went to a BSOD, but still didn't create a core dump. The uptime was about 37 minutes when it froze. I should also note that when it freezes, sound freezes as well, and all hard drive activity stops (I think that's why the core dump never works). I also just ran the Windows memory diagnostic when I rebooted and got no errors.

Here's some info about my machine:

Hello,

my name is Mihael and I'll try to help you with your issue.

Download HD Tune and run Error Scan with it. Make sure to uncheck the Quick Scan.  After that fo into the Health Tab and see whether anything is highlighted there.

Please post screenshots of both tabs.

Just to add to softwaremaniac's post, please note the high temps for the CPU and motherboard (and, to a lesser degree, the video card) in the Speccy report.

I'd suggest looking into your cooling solution:

- make sure that the CPU and GPU are firmly connected to the motherboard

- that any auxiliary power connectors are firmly seated

- that the coolers are firmly mounted to the CPU and GPU and that they have adequate (but not too much) thermal compound to ensure good contact with the device

- that the coolers are clean and free of dirt, dust, hairballs, etc

- that the cooler fans are blowing air into the cooler

- that the other system components aren't blowing hot air into the coolers

You may also want to open up the case and point a house fan (on high) into the case in order to see if this helps to stop the freezes

Good luck!

Thanks for the recommendations, guys. My fan was spinning, but given the temperatures I was seeing, it should have been spinning faster. I happened to have a spare fan laying around and swapped it in and that seems to have fixed the problem! It's been about a day of uptime and everything seems to be running fine. This laptop apparently goes through fans like candy, this is like the 3rd time I've had to replace it. I'm going to get a cooling pad too, since I run this thing pretty hard most of the time.
