I am setting up a new server 2012 r2 all in Hyper-v, this will be my first virtual set, where is the best place to store redirected folders and public shared drives? on the virtual machine itself? on the host? or another VHD?

Thanks all

You would want to store redirected folders and public shares on a machine that will be accessible to other clients. That could be the 2012 server. Best practice is to not cram everything onto a server. Will you be using this 2012 server as a domain controller?

If it's a production environment. only install the roles and features that are needed on that server, and point the folder redirection and public shares to another machine. If it's only a test environment, you should be fine.
