What happens if you boot into Safe Mode?

Safe Mode uses a different graphics driver, the image will have less definition than the drivers used in normal mode.  This is to be expected in Safe Mode.

What is the make and model of this computer?

Family and loved ones will always be a priority in my daily life.  You never know when one will leave you.

07/09/17 I have had a free account with Photobucket for over a decade which I've used to host images in my canned speeches.  A little over two weeks ago Photobucket changed the their Term of Service.  This resulted in those with a free account being required to upgrade to their most expensive account ($399. per year) in order to be able to post third party images hosted at their website.  All of my images have been restricted and or deleted.  I apologize for any inconvenience this situation may have caused.

It is a Dell Inspiron N7010

Safe mode boots up as nomal and loads all the way through, normal boot goes to login screen and after password entry it is blank with cursor

Edit for more info: I just want to add it's running on windows 7

Since the computer is working in Safe Mode I would suspect a driver issue.

Look in the Device Manager to see if there are any yellow warning icons or red error icons.

I want to have you run a Clean Boot to see if we can identify what is causing this.

How to perform a Clean Boot

Warning:  Disabling items in Services or Startup may leave your anitivius disabled until the process is ended.  For this reason I would suggest that you perform this process off line.

1.  Click on the Start orb, then type msconfig.exe in the Search programs and files box.

2.  When msconfig is seen in the pane above the search box and under Programs, right click on it, then click on Run as administrator.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, you should enter the password or provide confirmation.

3.  Click on the General tab.

4.  Click the Selective startup option.

5.  Remove the check mark in the Load startup items  check box.

6.Click on the Services tab.

7.  Place a check mark in the Hide all Microsoft services check box, this will remove the Microsoft Services from the list but will still be running.

8.  Click Disable all, this will remove all of the check marks in the Services list.

9.  Click on Hide all Microsoft services.  Click on Apply then OK

Click on Restart in the window that opens.

When the computer is restarted it will boot normally.

Let me know if the problem persists after restarting the computer.

If the problem does not continue after the restart please do the following.

10.  Devide the number of these services by two and you place checks in the first half of these, then restart
the computer.

11.  If the problem doesn't return in those services remove the checks and place checks in the remaining
services.

12.  When you find which half the service is in go on to the next step.

13.  In the half that the problem came back in you should remove the checks from the first half or the
services.

14.  Restart the computer.  If it isn't in the first half of these services, do the same with the last half of the
services.

15.  Once you have narrowed it down to the last three or four services remove the checks one at a time till
you find the service at fault.

Once you have found the service post it in your topic.  Do not take any action until I suggest the next step.

After clean boot results still the same, will not load up past login phase.

I did notice that when I applied the settings all the mcafee services enabled themselves again so they were the only ones that did not disable, could this be an issue?

I can try to give some context as to when this first happened too if that will help

A few days ago the laptop was doing some windows updates, the updates were hanging around 70% and not completing, left overnight and did not move

held down power button to turn off and booted into safe mode, windows then reverted the failed windows update and restarted laptop

It booted up fine on a normal boot then without issues, next time the pc was turned on is when the blank screen with cursor issue started

Try doing a System Restore.  Use a restore point dated prior to the Windows update debacle.

I have an appointment and will be gone until early afternoon PST.

That is also an issue, there is no system restore points before the fact.

I know there was before this issue because I had checked to do one if the update failed again and there was a list of them.

Since this issue the system restore points are blank

Can you please run Minitoolbox and post the scan report here? It'll show installed programs, event viewer errors and more useful information about the state of the computer. If this is not a hardware issue as dc3 also suggested, it could be that you have security software installed that is no longer compatible after the update for some reason.

You can download minitoolbox here: https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/minitoolbox/

regards, Elise

One thing to rule out would be your video driver. On boot tap F8 and in the options select Enable low-resolution video. Worth a shot. Also selecting Use Last Known Good Configuration may work.

Just woke up, have a small few errands to do and then I shall run minitoolbox when I get back in.

As far as Low-res and Last known good configuration both lead to blank screen with cursor too.

I shall post back in a few hours

Can you please give some details on the following:

1) What was the date your computer last was able to boot successfully?

2) I see some traces of McAfee, was this installed and if so do you remember when you removed it (not the exact date, just an estimate).

I see also some controller errors, To determine on what disk these are (it could just be your usb drive), please do the following.

In safe mode, press the windows key + R, type cmd in the run box and press enter.

In the command prompt type diskpart and press enter.

Now type list disk and press enter.

Let me know what comes back (copy or screenshot it, whatever is easier for you).

regards, Elise
