Hi, I've had an error msg that states: "Generic Host Process For Win32 Services has encounted a problem and needs to close.. Which means my firewall is unable to open.. When I try to enable it I get the following error msg:  "Windows cannot start pare - feu Windows/partage de connexion internet service" Error 5 Access is denied. I've no idea why this has turned into French - but it has been like this for quite a while (Although the firewall problem is very recent..

Please can anyone help ?? Have included attachment from Farbar after scanning - here are the results.

Thank you kindly

You might consider doing a no-reformat, non-destrucive re-install of Windows XP...

https://www.informationweek.com/software/operating-systems/langa-letter-xps-no-reformat-nondestructive-total-rebuild-option/d/d-id/1044226?page_number=5

You can pre-download all of the updates using the freeware tool WSUS Offline Update...

http://download.wsusoffline.net/

You will need to find the last version that supported Windows XP in the archives.

BC member @Saw101 identified that as V. 9.1 [4 Apr 2014]

Good tutorial video...

https://youtu.be/aXAOvbNJYyE

This method will not work for OEM licenses.

To check your Product Key, download and run the free tool ShowKeyPlus...

https://github.com/Superfly-Inc/ShowKeyPlus/releases

If OEM shows in the Product ID, you do not have a retail version.

The alternative then would be a clean (from scratch) install. I would create a Linux Live CD (USB flash drive is fine), boot from that, and get your personal files backed up to removable media.

Hi, Thank you for your help - much appreciated.. Unfortunately OEM is in the XP Product ID - So I guess I'd have to do the last of your suggestions to create a Linux Live CD..

Btw - I ran some fixes in Anti Virus Killer by Carifred and they appear to have worked as the Firewall is up & running again (Just had to add all the progs back into Exceptions) - so for the moment I'm hoping this fix will suffice ??

Any other probs - I'll let you know (if that's ok ?)

Thanx again !!

If your only issue was the firewall, then use your computer as you would normally and see how things go.

Ah, well, yes, there are a few other issues but am too tired to go into it now - so I'll get back to you if it looks serious enough.. Meanwhile I'll see how things go..

The good thing about 'High Maintenance Operating Systems (Like the now outdated XP Pro & Home Editions) - is one learns about computers at a furious rate & troubleshooting becomes a complete obsession as one strives to get the damned thing back to what it's supposed to be doing - like working properly !! Lol..

Cheers, with wishes..

Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:
List last 10 Event Viewer log
  List Installed Programs
List Users, Partitions and Memory size.

Click Go and paste the content into your next post.

Also...please Publish a Snapshot using Speccy taking care to post the link of the snapshot in your next post.

Go to Piriform's website, and download the free version on the left.  Click Download from Piriform.com (the FileHippo link requires an extra click). Or if you want to use a portable version of Speccy (which doesn't require installation), click the builds page link and download the portable version. You will now be asked where you want to save the file. The best place to put it is the Desktop, as it will be easy to find later.

After the file finishes downloading, you are ready to run Speccy. If you downloaded the installer, simply double-click on it and follow the prompts until installation is complete. If you downloaded the portable version, you will need to unzip it before use. Right-click the ZIP file and click Extract all. Click Next. Open up the extracted folder and double-click on Speccy.

Once inside Speccy, it will look similar to this (with your computer's specifications, of course):

post-33068-0-86653600-1480692866_thumb.j

Now, at the top, click File > Publish Snapshot.

Click Yes > then Copy to Clipboard

Now, once you are back in the forum topic you are posting in, click the ADD REPLY or REPLY TO THIS TOPIC button. Right-click in the empty space of the Reply box and click Paste. Then, click Add Reply below the Reply box.

Windows install date of Feb 2006, all critical updates reflected as failures.

Both Avast and AVG processes running.

Java out of date.

2GB of RAM installed.

Potentially Unwanted Program (Secure Browser) installed.

I would uninstall all AV software and then just reinstall one.  Either updata Java properly or uninstall it totally.  I would also uninstall the Secure Browser.

Then...I would run the chkdsk /r command...and follow that with the sfc /scannow command.

If you don't use Java for a specific reason, I would recommend uninstalling it.

Java is a malware magnet.

Hi Louis,

Thank you kindly for your helpful advice (Of which I've done all you suggested) I'm happy to report that so far - so good.. I've had to move the i386 folder from another XP disk to my harddrive in order for the scannow to work & not keep asking for me to insert XP Home Edition disk (which I no longer have) & up to now the firewall hasn't gone down & everything seems reasonably ok - fingers crossed ??!! The firewall went down several times & took a lot of hard work & research to get it to stop crashing & causing the Generic Host Process Service needs to close due to a problem - to be resolved.. At one point I got the infamous 'Blue Screen Of Death' but luckily after re-booting in Safe Mode I was able to do various checks to try & insure this wouldn't happen again - after getting the 'Windows has recovered from a serious error' - msg..

The feeling of accomplishment when one solves a problem - is, well, very satisfying indeed !! I'm determined to stick with XP cos I love it as it always tends to keep me on my toes & I'm so used to having to troubleshoot that it has become quite addictive.. Although I am a musician - I'd love to work in computers in some shape or form.. Like playing a musical instrument - one never stops learning - & as I'm sure you'll agree - there's always more to learn about how Operating Systems work - the best lesson I've learnt is; what not to do & learning (sometimes very painfully !!) from one's silly mistakes.. Of which I've made more than my fair share !! Lol..

Incidentally - I've uninstalled Java completely from my PC and so far It doesn't seem to have affected it adversely - so thank you for the tip..

All the best & thank you again for taking the time to reply & for the splendid help..

Much appreciated..

With wishes..

From RikiRoy1..

Hi jwoods301,

Thank you kindly for the advice about Java being a 'Malware magnet' - I've uninstalled Java completely from my PC and so far It doesn't seem to have affected it adversely - so thank you for the tip..

So far my PC seems to be working without issue so - fingers crossed !!??..

If any other issues/problems arise then I'll leave another comment on this (great) forum..

All the best & bye for now..

From..

RikiRoy1..
