Hi,

The forums are really busy, that explains why logs get behind. If you still need some help, please start with posting a new hijackthislog in this thread. Don't start with a new thread.
Then I'll take a look.

Hello,

I notice that you do not seem to be running Antivirus software and a Firewall. This is somewhat suicidal in today's digital world.
That's why I want you to install them first!!

Avira, AVG OR Avast are good FREE antivirus.
Never install more than one antivirusscanner or firewall on your system! Several together can give problems and decrease the reliability of it seriously!
Agnitum Outpost Free OR Kerio are FREE firewalls.

Understanding and using firewalls

* Start HijackThis, close all open windows leaving only HijackThis running. Place a check against each of the following:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MSN Messenger] C:\WINDOWS\explorer..exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSN Messenger] C:\WINDOWS\explorer..exe
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.media-motor.net
O15 - Trusted Zone: *.mmohsix.com
O15 - Trusted Zone: http://click.getmirar.com (HKLM)
O15 - Trusted Zone: http://click.mirarsearch.com (HKLM)
O15 - Trusted Zone: http://redirect.mirarsearch.com (HKLM)

* Click on Fix Checked when finished and exit HijackThis.
Make sure your Internet Explorer is closed when you click Fix Checked!

Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update.

Updating Java:
  • Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 8.
  • Scroll down to where it says "The J2SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications".
  • Click the "Download" button to the right.
  • Check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
  • The page will refresh.
  • Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop.
  • Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
  • Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name. It should have the Posted Image icon next to it.
  • Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
  • Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
  • Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
  • Then from your desktop double-click on jre-1_5_0_08-windowsi586-p.exe to install the newest version.
* Clean your Cache and Cookies in IE:
  • Close all instances of Outlook Express and Internet Explorer
  • Go to Control Panel > Internet Options > General tab
  • Click the "Delete Cookies" button
  • Next to it, Click the "Delete Files" button
  • When prompted, place a check in: "Delete all offline content", click OK
* Clean your Cache and Cookies in Firefox (In case you also have Firefox installed):
  • Go to Tools > Options.
  • Click Privacy in the menu on the left side of the Options window.
  • Click the Clear button located to the right of each option (History, Cookies, Cache).
  • Click OK to close the Options window
Alternatively, you can clear all information stored while browsing by clicking Clear All.
A confirmation dialog box will be shown before clearing the information.
* Clean other Temporary files + Recycle bin
  • Go to start > run and type: cleanmgr and click ok.
  • Let it scan your system for files to remove.
  • Make sure Temporary Files, Temporary Internet Files, and Recycle Bin are the only things checked.
  • Press OK to remove them.
Please perform this online scan: Kaspersky Webscan
1. Read the Requirements and Privacy statement, then select "Accept"
2. A dialogue box will appearing asking "Do you want to install this software?" Name: kavwebscan_unicode.cab
3. Select "Install" to download the ActiveX controls that allows ActiveScan to run.
4. If running MSAS beta you may receive an alert that an IE ActiveX program requires your approval. Click "Allow"
5. When the download is complete it will say ready, click "Next"
6. Select a target to scan: Click on "My Computer"
7. When the scan is complete choose to save the results as "Save as Text"

Hello,

Go to this page.
Enter the url of this thread in the first field.
Where it says, browse to the file that you want to submit, click the browse button next to it and browse to next file, select it and click ok:

C:\WINDOWS\explorer..exe <== watch the spelling. The one I need has an extra point in the name. Don't upload the legit explorer.exe present there.

Then click the Send File button below.

* Reboot into Safe Mode`: ( without networking support !)
°To get into the Windows XP Safe Mode, restart your computer and, just before Windows starts to load, tap the F8 key a few times.
Choose Safe Mode from the menu that will appear and press Enter.

While in safe mode, check and fix next lines in hijackthis:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [MSN Messenger] C:\WINDOWS\explorer..exe
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [MSN Messenger] C:\WINDOWS\explorer..exe

Then delete next file.. BUT BE CAREFUL here!!

C:\WINDOWS\explorer..exe <== watch the extra point in it. DON'T delete the legit explorer.exe present there as well!! The bad one has an extra point in the name.

Reboot back to normal mode..

Download Silent Runners
Unzip it to a permanent folder.
Start SilentRunners.vbs
When your antivirus is giving an alert, do not block this. Allow the script.
Please wait until it prompts you the scan is finished!
I need that log afterwards..

* Download Combofix to your desktop.
Doubleclick combo.exe
Follow the prompts.
Don't click on the window while the fix is running, because that will cause your system to hang.

When finished and after reboot, it should open a log, combofix.txt.
Post this log in your next reply together with a new hijackthislog.

Hello,

Some extra info..

Actually safe mode is not needed to delete the file. It will get deleted in normal mode very easily.
Kaspersky and Avira flag it as Trojan/Pakes, however it really looks like backdoor Bifrose.
This one collects system information and sends it to hackers and may download and execute more files.

Perform next as well..

Open notepad and copy and paste next present in the quotebox below in it:
(don't forget to copy and paste REGEDIT4)

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wget]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\{9B71D88C-C598-4935-C5D1-43AA4DB90836}]

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wget]

Save this as fix.reg Choose to save as *all files and place it on your desktop.
It should look like this: Posted Image
Doubleclick on it and when it asks you if you want to merge the contents to the registry, click yes/ok.
(In case you are unsure how to create a reg file, take a look here with screenshots.)

Also delete this file:

c:\WINDOWS\plugin1.dat

Hello,

Well, we are not finished here yet though...

Open notepad and copy and paste next present in the quotebox below in it:
(don't forget to copy and paste REGEDIT4)

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shared Tools\MSCONFIG\Startupreg\MSN Messenger]

Save this as fix2.reg Choose to save as *all files and place it on your desktop.
It should look like this: Posted Image
Doubleclick on it and when it asks you if you want to merge the contents to the registry, click yes/ok.
(In case you are unsure how to create a reg file, take a look here with screenshots.)

Go to next site:
http://www.virustotal.com/en/indexf.html
On top you'll find 'Browse'
Click the browse button and browse to next file:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\wmedia.exe

Click open.
Then click the 'Send' button next to it.
This will scan the file. Please be patient.
Once scanned, copy and paste the results in your next reply.

Perform the same for next file:

C:\WINDOWS\divxplay.exe

Can you tell me when exactly these freezes happen? Does it happen when opening certain programs?

prompting me to CTRL-ALT-DEL jus to get into task manager in which i then close task manager out and then im allowed to click everything agen

What prompts you to open Taskmanager? And after you close taskmanager, it works again? Or did you end a certain process in taskmanager? Do you still get that now after deleting that explorer..exe? Because that file opened a backdoor for hackers..

I also want you to perform next..

Download and Save blacklight to your desktop.
F-Secure Blacklight: https://europe.f-secure.com/blacklight/try.shtml
Double-click blbeta.exe then accept the agreement.
click > scan then > next,
You'll see a list of all items found.
Don't choose for rename yet! I want to see the log first, because legit items can also be present there...
There must be also a log on your desktop with the name fsbl.xxxxxxx.log (the xxxxxxx stand for numbers)
Post the contents of the log in your next reply.

Hmm, concerning the wmedia.exe... it says it is 0 bytes, which means that it was most probably in use when you uploaded it and that explains as well why every scanner says no virus found. because as I see from your Combofix log, it's quite a big file, the wmedia.exe (btw, has the same filesize as the explorer..exe you uploaded before)
Does it also has the same icon? Green with black?
Anyway, I guess this one is a bad one as well.... since it also loads under the Installed Components, the same way as the explorer..exe did.

First of all, I want to make sure that your extensions are shown, so perform next..

Please set your system to show all files.
Click Start.
Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Click Yes to confirm.
Click OK.

Can you rename that wmedia.exe to wmedia.bad. Then reboot.
Then upload the winmedia.bad on next site as well:

http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/submit-malware.php?channel=8

The reason why I ask you to rename it first and then reboot is because when you just go to above page and upload it before renaming and reboot, it will be the same 0 bytes, since it is in use and I can't do anything with it. Normally, when you look at the file in your system32 folder, it should be 1.21 MB

Then delete the wmedia.bad after you uploaded it.

Also perform next..

Open notepad and copy and paste next present in the quotebox below in it:
(don't forget to copy and paste REGEDIT4)

REGEDIT4

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Active Setup\Installed Components\{0002BB0C-D318-FD27-0505-050505040105}]

Save this as fix3.reg Choose to save as *all files and place it on your desktop.
It should look like this: Posted Image
Doubleclick on it and when it asks you if you want to merge the contents to the registry, click yes/ok.
(In case you are unsure how to create a reg file, take a look here with screenshots.)

Concerning the C:\WINDOWS\divxplay.exe.
I see it is 15 MB and that's the reason why the online scan takes so long.
Can you rightclick C:\WINDOWS\divxplay.exe and tell me what it says in the properties? Version, company etc etc.. and how does the icon look?
Let me know in your next reply.

Also let me know after deleting wmedia.bad if your system still freezes.

Hi,

Yes, I already thought that the divxplay.exe was legit. It was too big in filesize to be malware. But you never know.. since these explorer..exe and wmedia.exe were also 1.21 MB big.

Did you delete the wmedia.bad now?

Good to hear since you renamed/deleted that file that. I had a quick look at the strings and I see this file was protected with Themida. Exactly the same as the explorer..exe, so both are related.

I see no scanner is detecting it yet, so thank you very much for the file.
It certainly is bad..

Normally freezes should be stopped now.

Let me know how things are running now.
