i was in a google hangout on youtube talking in the chats and there was some guy claiming he was a programmer and that he was going to "shut my router off"... is this even possible without clicking any links or anything like that? Or was he just trying to scare me?

Your public IP address (the one assigned to you by your ISP) is just that...public.

Here's an example...

https://ipleak.net/

It is a legitmate site that shows both your public IP, and does a geolocation on where it is.

One BC member posted recently that someone tried to intimidate her with this information. Same thing with you.

Your router logs could show thousands of attempts per day of attempted connections that have been blocked, which means your router firewall is doing its job.

The problem is when you have open ports on your router. Use these two test sites to see if you have those issues, and fix them if you do.

Incorrectly configured router security also needs to be addressed -

Could be wrong, but I don't see how they could do that without first breaching YouTube's security. They'd effectively have to hack YouTube's servers, just to find your IP address. The level of sophistication and work necessary for that, all for an IP address would be absurd. I'd assume they are just trying to scare you.

Shouldn't be possible if you stayed on google hangouts site and nothing else, so its just a empty threat.

The issue is javascript enabled, WebRTC leaks, and DNS leaks that Youtube Ads can stealthy use.

It would be very difficult.

But even if someone could, your public IP is not a problem...see post # 2.
