cant run task manager or malwarebytes

hi there!

this morning, my laptop froze as i was watching a youtube video. i restarted my computer, however videos were playing weirdly without sound and werent starting properly so i thought it'd be best to run a virus scan, however, malwarebytes wouldn't open, providing me with the error message along the lines of 'mbam.exe wasn't able to start in a timely fashion' or something. i tried to open task manager, and the same error happened. it wont let me use file manager properly. i cant run command prompt either, it says i don't have the right program?? i can't remember which isnt very helpful but at the moment i'm rather in a state of panic and i just want this fixed.

does anyone know what to do? i will literally do a whole system reset back to how it was when i got it but i'd rather try and find an alternate option first. my computer runs windows 8.1

Try Using System Restore , to the last one created , and revert back to that point.

i dont recall ever making a restore point which is really dumb of me - however also i just tried to open it and it wont open either

im not familiar with Win 8.1 , and Last Known Configuration via F8 at boot is not available on Win 8. 

You could try a Refresh from settings and option to keep files.

 

You may have a Virus / Malware , so wait for another response from someone to assist you further if needed. , 

 

No need to Panic , just be patient and someone will assist you.

Your problem is likely caused by malware. Start a new topic by following the instructions below.

 

Please follow the instructions in the Malware Removal and Log Section Preparation Guide starting at Step 6.

  • If you cannot complete a step, then skip it and continue with the next.
  • In Step 6 there are instructions for downloading and running FRST which will create two logs.

When you have done that, post your logs in the Virus, Trojan, Spyware, and Malware Removal Logs forum, NOT here, for assistance by the Malware Response Team.

Start a new topic, give it a relevant title and post your log(s) along with a brief description of your problem, a summary of any anti-malware tools you have used and a summary of any steps that you have performed on your own. If you cannot produce any of the required logs...start the new topic anyway. Explain that you followed the Prep. Guide, were unable to create the logs, and describe what happened when you tried to create them. A member of the Malware Removal Team will walk you through, step by step, on how to clean your computer.

After doing this, please reply back in this thread with a link to the new topic so we can close this one.
