Looking for recommendations for external hard drive to run linux

Instead of partitioning Windows I'd rather have Linux on an external drive. Is there anything in particular I need to be aware of when buying? Does any hard drive work for any computer, etc.

 

Also, I can take out Linux and insert a different disk and backup my drive, right? Or would that be a different type of HD?

you dont even need an external hard drive....you could run linux from a USB drive....much cheaper

No problems with virtual distros, I use several all the time. However...what do you want to do with it? That is the issue.
