 Hello all,

 I need a bit of help with a machine. Friend of mine has a laptop with Win 10 installed on it. Laptop was taking about 7-10 minutes to boot up. I recon this was taking long cuz of updates which they kept stalling and stopping from happening.

 

 About machine:

 Brand: Asus X540S

 OS: Win 10 Home x64-bit

 CPU: Intel N3700 @ 1.6GHz

 Memory: 4 GB Ram

 

 What I noticed:

 - OS updates were not going through

 - The HDD was not partitioned so all 500 GB was allocated to C:

 - Some useless app which come with laptop were coming up at startup

 - Antivirus was expired and kept poping up notifications

 

 What I did:

 - I ran a sfc /scannow which returned no violations/corruptions in the OS

 - I manually updated the OS so they are now up to date

 - I got rid of the antivirus and installed Malwarebytes along with turning on Windows Defender

 - I scan the notebook for viruses and returned nothing

 - I shrink the C: partition to half. It won't let me go lower than 250 GB (No idea why. I getting an error saying there's not enough space on disk to complete this operation.

 - I remove a lot of useless apps and startups which were slowing it down.

 - Cleared temp folder

 

 So now it takes about 2 minutes to do a full reboot and get back on to the point where it can be used. I suppose I did lower the boot up time, but I wish I could have done better. Maybe it is just me being used with a powerful machine which boots up in 20 seconds or I still haven't completely fix it. I don't know what else to do.

 

 Is there anything else I could do or the notebook is not strong enough to run better ?

Please download and install Speccy to provide us with information about your computer.  Clicking on this link will automatically initiate the download.

The one piece of information the Speccy will not provide is the make and model of your PSU.  If you know what it is please post this along with the Speccy link which will be generated.

When Speccy opens you will see a screen similar to the one below.

Click on File which is outlined in red in the screen above, and then click on Publish Snapshot.
 
The following screen will appear, click on Yes.

How to view all Windows 8.1 and Windows 10 applications, App Store applications, and third party applicaions installed on your computer.  This will not list Portable Applications.

Press the Windows key windowskey_zps092d5c75.png and the R key to open the Run box.

When the Run box opens copy and paste shell:appsfolder, then click/tap on OK.

 Ok so, if PSU is the AC adaptor then this is what is written on it:

 ASUS AC Adapater

 It's pretty small, like a phone adapter. Nothing like the big brick I have for my laptop.

I thought there was an excessive number of svchost processes running but I guess this is normal for Windows 10.

 Well, I didn't really notice an improvement when doing the clean boot. Same almost two minutes to boot.

Did the computer come pre-installed with Windows 10 or was it upgraded from a previous OS?

One of the things that you can do to increase the speed would be to add another 4GB of RAM.  It seems that Windows 10 runs well with 8GB of RAM.  The Speccy usually will post the manufacturer of your RAM and the model of the modules you have installed.  But in this case that information wasn't available.  This is important because this computer is capable of running in Dual Channel.  Running in dual channel effectively doubles the RAM through put which increases the speed.  In order to run in dual channel you need to have a matched pair of modules, this is why I was disappointed not to see the manufacturer and the model.  But we can find this information by having you download CPUID-HWMonitor.

 

Once you have the Hardware Monitor installed tap/click on the SPD tab.  Once the program is installed and you open it the HDMonitor will go online and update itself.  You will see a image similar to the one below once it is open.  Click/tab of the SPD tab.

In the upper left portion of the image you can see Memory Slot Selection.  There is a down arrow directly below this, you will need to click/tap on this until you one module is seen.  In the image above I've outlined Part Number, this is the information that I need.  Please post this in your topic and I will find a match to the module you already have installed with the best price I can find.  The manufacturer is listed just above the part number, I would like to have this information as well.

Please download AdwCleaner and install it.

When AdwCleaner opens you will see an image like the one below.

Click on Scan to start the scan.

Once the search is complete a list of the pending items will be displayed.  If you see any which you do not want removed, remove the check mark next to it.

If there are no malicious programs are found you will receive the following message.

Click on Clean to remove the selected items.  If you have any questions about any items in the list please copy and paste the list in your topic so we can review it.  
 
You will receive a message telling you that all programs will be closed so that the infections can be removed.  Click on OK.  The computer will be restarted to complete the cleaning process.
 
When the cleaning process is complete a log of what was removed will be presented.  Please copy and the paste this log in your topic.

 I have not idea to be honest. It's my wife's friend notebook so I am not to sure. I just offered to help with it. I will find out if that is relevant. My guess it the notebook came with Win 10 on it as the person using it is not too much tech savvy to go through a Windows upgrade.

 Note: HWMonitor is not same software with CPU-Z. I did download CPU-Z anyhow and checked that. Interesting thing is, the SPD tab returns no information on either slot (#1 and #2). I will post the CPU-Z log at the end of this post.

 

 AdwCleaner returned no infections.

So now it takes about 2 minutes to do a full reboot and get back on to the point where it can be used. I suppose I did lower the boot up time, but I wish I could have done better.

Both Slow #1 and Slot #2 show exactly nothing.
