In Windows 8/8.1 the product code is embedded in the BIOS.

There is a lot of information missing here which will be needed in order to be able to help you.

What is the make and model of this computer?

How did you "eradicate" Windows from the hdd?

What version of Windows did you have installed?  Windows 8, Windows 8.1,  32-bit or 64-bit.

Do you have the installation media to reinstall the operating system.

The product key can be retrieved using ShowKeyPlus -

https://github.com/Superfly-Inc/ShowKeyPlus/releases

The issue will be whether it is retail or OEM.

This is why I asked for the information in my last post.  Without that information we are guessing and wasting our time.

I get why you asked.

OEM keys can be re-activated without a clean install by rebuilding the cert key in tokens.dat.

So if it turns out to be OEM, we might be able to save his install.

Time for another song.
