My Media centre edition machine has started freezing towards the end of start up routine. Nothing responds and so I must try warm restart, ,maybe switch off or cut power. Increasingly cycle is worse in that machine does not then even reach hardware list on new attempt. Issue is always the first startup of the day. Am now trying chkdsk and repair to fix. Seems when I do get to usable desktop I get a message about screen resolution being very low (only following crash), which I so far have ignored as display seems fine. Could this be a message about display drivers being faulty?

Once startup issue over, machine runs fine, with practically no issues.

When I get the black screen only on repeated startup, I sometimes hear the usual startup beeps in the background, but see nothing. I even hear the Welcome sounds. Does this too suggest a graphics issue?

How too to get to an effective restart sequence if just black screen but hd running in the background, if this chkdsk does not work?

ps: nothing new installed for ages.

Thanks

Hi,

Its a Mesh machine

E6600 Dual core Intel processor

ASUS P5n-E SLI nForce 650i SLI(C55) mainboard

320mb nvidia geforece 800 GTS video

running XP Media edition

Having eventually got to a boot up routine, I ran a CHKDSK /p/r and it reported, something to the effect of finding some bad segments.  Since then machine has started up reliably and not frozen once!  So don't understand how significant this result, nor what the implications?  But short term I'm feeling a bit better, and as you can see, able to reply!

Bad Sectors Explained Why Hard Drives Get Bad Sectors and What You Can Do About It - http://www.howtogeek.com/173463/bad-sectors-explained-why-hard-drives-get-bad-sectors-and-what-you-can-do-about-it/

If your error message cited bad sectors...the above link will provide more info on such.

The Windows tool for trying to recover data which is found on bad sectors...is the chkdsk /r command.  It tries to move such data from the bad sectors to good sectors on the partition.  It is not successful in every case.

Thanks for that.  I like the part in particular, that says "... Bad sectors are just a reality of hard disks, and there’s generally no reason to panic when you encounter one.." so that's good.  I wonder about the other feature I noticed when the machine partially started up, that it seemed to complete in background, with all the usual bleeps and whirrs but no display.  Could that be related to bad segments?  The device manager has never highlighted anything as problematic?

I would not take solace from the part of the link which you quoted.  Another part of same link points out...that bad sectors CAN be indicative of a hard drive problem, where the drive itself has a problem being able to function properly.

The common way to check the functional status of the hard drive...is to run a reliable hard drive diagnostic.  If you provide us with the manufacturer of your drive (e.g., Samsung, Seagate, Western Digital, Hitachi), then we can suggest a diagnostic tool for such check.

Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:
List last 10 Event Viewer log
  List Installed Programs
List Users, Partitions and Memory size.

Click Go and paste the content into your next post.

Also...please Publish a Snapshot using Speccy taking care to post the link of the snapshot in your next post.

Go to Piriform's website, and download the free version on the left.  Click Download from Piriform.com (the FileHippo link requires an extra click). Or if you want to use a portable version of Speccy (which doesn't require installation), click the builds page link and download the portable version. You will now be asked where you want to save the file. The best place to put it is the Desktop, as it will be easy to find later.

After the file finishes downloading, you are ready to run Speccy. If you downloaded the installer, simply double-click on it and follow the prompts until installation is complete. If you downloaded the portable version, you will need to unzip it before use. Right-click the ZIP file and click Extract all. Click Next. Open up the extracted folder and double-click on Speccy.

Once inside Speccy, it will look similar to this (with your computer's specifications, of course):

post-33068-0-86653600-1480692866_thumb.j

Now, at the top, click File > Publish Snapshot.

Click Yes > then Copy to Clipboard

Now, once you are back in the forum topic you are posting in, click the ADD REPLY or REPLY TO THIS TOPIC button. Right-click in the empty space of the Reply box and click Paste. Then, click Add Reply below the Reply box.

Just a quick thought...having seen the level of detail in the Speccy snapshot.  Have just broadcast to the world everything possible about my machine that anyone with a Bleeping account can now read - that makes me a bit concerned?  You, Hamluis I recognise, it's the others I'd be concerned about????? Thanks

People experience "concern" in many situations...I cannot address that.

But I can assert that if you see anything that you think is worthy of concern...in the data submitted...then request deletion of this topic and I will negate "your exposure" by complying with your request.

I will say...whatever "concern" you may have over providing requested data...in a situation where you are publicly seeking assistance on an open forum via the Internet...should surely have taken into account these circumstances...before asking for assistance on such a forum.

In any case...I see no evidence of a driver problem, nor do I see any indication of a drive problem.  But I don't have much faith in systems or hard drives with a Windows install that's 10 years old or more...placed upon a hard drive that seems to be less than 6 months old.  The two don't add up, in my world.

Your Event Viewer application errors point to some problems with Office/Outlook and the BullGuard software.  Generally speaking...such application errors may possibly be overcome by uninstalling the specified software, then reinstalling same and updating it.

I have no clue what your DCOM errors might mean.

Louis

No that doesn't make sense about the HD - this is as old as the machine.  The rest of the kit works well and so I've had no need to change it - it does all I want it to do. Thanks for the guidance feedback nevertheless.

You could always download/install/run SeaTools For Windows, dc3 - http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/595453/restart-your-computer-to-install-windows-updates/?p=3857682 as a check on the hard drive.  Your hard drive is small by today's standards so I would expect the diagnostic to take no more than 90 minutes or less to complete its check.

Oops! Problem on start up has now already recurred after a number of problem-free days of use! Definitely hearing a startup routine in the background, but nothing on screen. Seems pot-luck when I'll next get proper startup. How to get past this issue??
Last thing I read about Seagate HDD tod was that it requires .net Framework v.4 to allow this to download / run. So far I only have v. 3.5. Can I just download from microsoft without any issues -I've no idea what exactly this does or if multiple versions can exist on a machine. Thanks for any further guidance!

Did you actually try to run the hard drive diagnostic?

No, not yet. As I wrote before, the install routine said it needs the .net update before it will complete. I don't know the significance of this program, can I just download .net v4 framework on top of my existing V. 3.5 version?
