Dell OptiPlex GX280,

2.8 GHz Intel Pentium 4,

16 Kb primary memory cache, 1024 Kb secondary memory cache, Not hyper-threaded.

Board oH7276, Bus Clock 800 MH.

500 Gb HD.

RAM 1024 MB (x 1), 512 MB (x 3)

This computer was constantly maxing out the cpu capacity - even when it was idle. I couldn't find a software cause, so finally I wiped and reloaded Windows 7, fresh. During the process of finding and installing drivers I noticed the cpu maxing. Even after the fresh copy of Windows, I noticed the cpu pegging 100% upon opening windows or doing nothing at all, just background stuff happening. It freezes up, often.

I have to assume this is a hardware issue. I've never faced symptoms like these. Is there a most likely culprit?

Thanks.

Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:
List last 10 Event Viewer log
  List Installed Programs
List Users, Partitions and Memory size.

Click Go and paste the content into your next post.

Also...please Publish a Snapshot using Speccy taking care to post the link of the snapshot in your next post.

Go to Piriform's website, and download the free version on the left.  Click Download from Piriform.com (the FileHippo link requires an extra click). Or if you want to use a portable version of Speccy (which doesn't require installation), click the builds page link and download the portable version. You will now be asked where you want to save the file. The best place to put it is the Desktop, as it will be easy to find later.

After the file finishes downloading, you are ready to run Speccy. If you downloaded the installer, simply double-click on it and follow the prompts until installation is complete. If you downloaded the portable version, you will need to unzip it before use. Right-click the ZIP file and click Extract all. Click Next. Open up the extracted folder and double-click on Speccy.

Once inside Speccy, it will look similar to this (with your computer's specifications, of course):

post-33068-0-86653600-1480692866_thumb.j

Now, at the top, click File > Publish Snapshot.

Click Yes > then Copy to Clipboard

Now, once you are back in the forum topic you are posting in, click the ADD REPLY or REPLY TO THIS TOPIC button. Right-click in the empty space of the Reply box and click Paste. Then, click Add Reply below the Reply box.

A single core Pentium 4 from ...mid-summer of 2004 vintage? (I remember assembling a P4-2400C in an SFF chassis during the summer of 2004)

I would expect it to be quite busy (frequent spikes to 100% usage)  keeping up with Windows updates, etc., and especially so after a fresh install....

Edit: the first 800 MHz FSB Pentium 4's were being benchmarked in 2003...

Vintage 2005. But I think most of the Windows updates were already done.

Hrm such a old machine running 7, I am unsure if the hardware can fully take it for much longer.

How long have you been running windows 7 on this machine?

Specs.

Install dated 6 Jun 2017.

Appears to me that Windows Update woes may be choking your system resources, although I don't see anything that might indicate 100% CPU usage at any time, other than your Windows Update errors.

Madman, just a few days this time. And only a month or so before the fresh install. I had no idea the hardware would be taxed with win upgrade. It used to have xp.

Hamluis, thank you. I'll keep observing. Maybe when all the update stuff is caught up, things will settle. Apparently the win upgrade is a bit much for the old system.

Yeah it may be too old for 7.

If money is low and you cannot afford machine you may want to try linux on it, linux isnt that hard to use and can be a good substitute.

Better that than run XP
