I have an AT&T Samsung Galaxy III model SGH-1747. My carrier is Cricket, can I upgrade from ice cream sandwich to lollipop?
If so how would I do that? Thank you.

When a Upgrade is available from Samsung you will be notified , or you can check manually if you wish.

If none are available then you have what you have.

How much are you into rooting and custom ROMing??

Some phones do not get upgrades by default. But if you want to explore the new features you can use a custom ROM. Have some research on having them then go through XDA forums for the same.

Samsung phones can be rooted easily.

But confirm with your service provider if they service for Custom ROMed phones.

Use KingoRoot or any other rooting application  for rooting. Install TWRP after rooting.
