Opening a .prj file.

I have a file with the extention .prj.  The file was created in 1997 and I cannot seem to find a way to open it.  It appears to be some sort of text document.  When I open it up in a text editor, There are some readable sentences but most of the text are just blank boxes.  Any ideas would be appreciated.
