Hi There,

So my monster ZT system machine with several HD's has a major start up issue. Every morning it takes at least 10 minutes for it to start up and when it does it is cranky and shuts down in a few minutes of either idling, ruining various programs or trying to access the net.

if I try to turn it on again imminently some times it turns on and sometimes it doesn't, sometimes it turns on for 10 seconds or so then it turns off, and many variations of such. After a few attempts, it turns on, does its things and works flawlessly for the rest of the day, until tomorrow morning with the same story all over again.

Just recently I have added a SSD drive making it the main C drive for performance improvements but the problems pre-existed even before that and did not change.

I have thought it must be the power supply so I replaced the power supply with a slightly more powerful one going from 350W to a 400W and it was A-OK for a few days but went back to its old habits thereafter.

This machine is protected by "ESET nod 32" and paid version of malwarebytes with no issues reported.

Every now and then It opens up a script window, dos window, for a fraction of a second and closes it.It happenes halfway between windows making it imposible to see what scripts or commands are running there :(((.

No Blue screen, but when it turns back on from the previous shut down it does go thru the process of choosing netween three available options and I always chosee to turn on the windows normaly.

My comp tech thinks it is a heat related issue, we have cleaned all the fans ETC with no avail.

What gives ? Your help is greatly appreciated.

Rick

Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:
List last 10 Event Viewer log
  List Installed Programs
List Users, Partitions and Memory size.

Click Go and paste the content into your next post.

Also...please Publish a Snapshot using Speccy taking care to post the link of the snapshot in your next post.

Go to Piriform's website, and download the free version on the left.  Click Download from Piriform.com (the FileHippo link requires an extra click). Or if you want to use a portable version of Speccy (which doesn't require installation), click the builds page link and download the portable version. You will now be asked where you want to save the file. The best place to put it is the Desktop, as it will be easy to find later.

After the file finishes downloading, you are ready to run Speccy. If you downloaded the installer, simply double-click on it and follow the prompts until installation is complete. If you downloaded the portable version, you will need to unzip it before use. Right-click the ZIP file and click Extract all. Click Next. Open up the extracted folder and double-click on Speccy.

Once inside Speccy, it will look similar to this (with your computer's specifications, of course):

post-33068-0-86653600-1480692866_thumb.j

Now, at the top, click File > Publish Snapshot.

Click Yes > then Copy to Clipboard

Now, once you are back in the forum topic you are posting in, click the ADD REPLY or REPLY TO THIS TOPIC button. Right-click in the empty space of the Reply box and click Paste. Then, click Add Reply below the Reply box.

Louis

If you cannot do the above from normal boot...try booting into safemode with networking and then proceeding.

I don't see anything that forces me to comment on your startup issues.  But...since you indicated that such may be of a hardware nature, it probaly would not hurt  initiate a post in BC's Internal Hardware forum, if problems continue above/beyond the UDF issue.

My comp tech thinks it is a heat related issue, we have cleaned all the fans ETC with no avail.

Define "Tech".  Are you paying this "Tech"?

As a Tech, when I think something is a "heat related issue" I install a temperature monitoring software, and put the system under load in order to find out if it's a heat related issue or not.

Also, as a Tech, if I think it's a heat issue, I check and usually replace the thermal compound between the CPU and CPU Fan.

Okay, there's your dose of Vitamin Snark, in case you were deficient.

http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/hwmonitor.html

Install this.  Play a video or two.  If results are inconclusive (meaning NOT off-the-charts-hot), then install this:

https://www.mersenne.org/download/  (Either 32 or 64 bit)  Run the "blended" test which stresses both CPU and memory. Monitor for max temp (you should see it quickly, like less than 2 minutes) and report results here.

Wait.  What's this?

You have Irfan view installed, mention your "Tech" thinks it's "heat related" but you don't mention the temps.  Report temps under at idle, and under load using either Irfan view or HWMonitor.

_So I tried to install http://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/hwmonitor.html but the Malwarebytes is not letting me thru, is there any other monitoring program available?

_As for the tech comment; My tech is a great one and one of the few that can handle my complicated networking issues efficiently. I just mention this issue to him very casually and he said it might be a heat related issue, he was never officially asked to work on this problem specifically.

_I may not get the snark reference in here but what is the issue with IrfanView ? Please elaborate .

Thanks

Well if IRFanview is installed you can use that to display the temps.  So if the Tech didn't install IRFan view, then how did it get there.  This is a temperature reporting utility that is only used by Techs and people who dabble.  I get the impression you don't dabble, which is part of where the snark comment came from.  By dabble I mean "mess with your computer at random, thinking you know more than you do and then failing to fully disclose what you either know or have done when a qualified Tech tries to help you.

Failing that, figure out a way to force malwarebytes to make an exception, or turn it off temporarily, or whatever you have to do.  If it's heat-related, you have to see the temps.

IrfanView is a free imaging/viewing software http://www.irfanview.net/  and I have been using it for decades, if it has CPU temp options, it's beyond me !!!

I do like to figure out things but will never "Dabble" as you put it. I have about 20 machines in this place anything from windows 2000 and up, with 3 Mac_eroes in between and they all are in SHIP-SHAPE form, except this one that I can not figure out. So having said all that, I don't mind if i have to be put in my place if I have been snarky, I just wasn't, just want to get to the bottom of this.

I also have had a systematic approach to this problem starting with the power supply and progressing from there, I didn't however want to get this deep into component level cause I never thought it could be it simply because I have never encountered the issue, power supplies however I have changed half a dozen.

I did mange to install "CoreTemp" and view the temps and it was very interesting. The core temps idle at low sixties, even opening up a browser shoots them all the way up to high nineties, watching a 4k video makes it lag and not play properly and temps stay at max 99, these are the exact things it does, but for the life of me I would not think it would be the compound, I Hope it is. I have just ordered the silly thing and will report back as soon as possible.

Thank you very much I think the issue will be solved very soon.

Rick

Yeah, sorry I'm WAY wrong on this.  For some reason I thought IRfanview was a temp & voltage monitoring software.  Maybe there is one with a similar name?  IDK.  I've been out of computer repair and have just started getting back into it, so all my "expertise" is 4 years old, or older.  And foggy.

So 90 C is WAY too high.  First thing I'd wonder about is how long the thermal compound has been installed.  Thermal compound is a material that fills the voids between the CPU and the CPU fan.  Sometimes it's a sticky piece of plastic tape, sometimes it's white goop, like caulk and sometimes it's a grey-colored grease.  Some thermal compounds are better than others.  It's purpose is to aid in the transfer of heat from the CPU to the CPU fan.  It fills the little tiny holes, or voids where the air would be an insulator, the thermal compound is supposed to conduct the heat away from the CPU so that the fan can dissipate it, making the CPU run cooler.  A too-hot CPU can cause data corruption, which can cause all manner of problems.  Anything you can imagine, literally.  Sudden freezes, shut-downs, hangs, glitches, video artifacts, files disappearing, image file corruptions, devices suddenly deciding they need to reinstall themselves, ANYTHING.

So first thing to do is look at your cooling solution.  Make sure you have a CPU fan, that it's working properly, spinning, cooling, etc... and that it's reasonably clean.  Sometimes those fans become intermittent, where they work when you are looking at them and then they stop working when you aren't looking at them.

Second thing is to remove the CPU fan and inspect the CPU/CPU fan interface and see what the thermal compound looks like.  I've seen very old thermal compounds solidify with time, get hard, and degrade from pliable white to a powdery brown, so that instead of conducting heat they actually act as an insulator.

Thing is, if you are going to pull the CPU fan to take a look, you may as well have new thermal compound on hand and just "refresh" it, since you are doing all the work of pulling, and replacing the fan.  I used to use, and recommend, something called "Arctic Silver 5" by Antec, but after a few years I noticed that the grey silver greasy stuff I put in would turn hard like a rock and so now I no longer recommend it.  I don't have a better one, unfortunately.  I had needed to find one tomorrow, I'd look for a thermal compound that under no circumstances would harden with age, or heat.

It's also possible that your CPU fan is inadequate.  There are two kinds of CPU fans, the "factory" which is usually whatever was shipped by the OEM manufacturer, or sometimes it comes with the CPU itself, or an "aftermarket" CPU fans, which are higher in quality, higher in price and they are usually much larger than the factory CPU fans.  If you have a factory CPU fan, it's reasonably clean, and working properly, and you have fresh thermal compound applied, and your temps are still WAY too high (90 is way to high), then you will probably have to purchase an aftermarket CPU fan.

After market CPU fans:  Infinite number of choices, but I would recommend finding someone that "knows something" and buy what they have, or what they recommend.  A forum Mod, or Admin, or a professional builder.  CPU fans are "matched" to computer systems based on the "socket" of the CPU/motherboard, so the 1st thing you need to know is what socket is your CPU & Motherboard and that will limit the selection of what CPU fans you can use.  Example if your motherboard is a "socket 1151" then you will need a CPU fan that is "socket 1151 compatible".  Another tactic for buying a CPU fan is to do searches of the model number of your motherboard, and include the term "CPU fan" in the search, so that you might find someone that has your motherboard and you can see which CPU fan they used, ESPECIALLY if it's a knowledgeable person like a forum Mod or Admin.  Cost of CPU fan could be from $30 to $130, depending on how bare bones or exotic you want to go.  The other thing to mention is that sometimes there are space/physical size restrictions.  Sometimes these super high-end CPU fans can get quite tall, and so the User needs to make certain they will physically fit inside their case (as well as being compatible with their Motherboard and CPU (socket).

EDIT***

On re-read, the word "refresh" was technically correct but misleading.  You do not "refresh" thermal compound by adding new stuff to the old, like the normal definition of the word "refresh" would imply.  In computer repair terms, "refreshing" the thermal compound means cleaning the old stuff off completely using a combination of mechanical action (scraping, rubbing with paper towel or whatever) as well as 90% isopropyl alcohol (aka "rubbing alcohol", and not the 60% weaker stuff; use the 90% stronger stuff, $2.00 at Walmart) get both the CPU and the CPU fan totally clean and then add a thin layer of NEW thermal compound in order to "refresh" it.  I think the word refresh is used in the industry/trade to convey the idea that it's never a permanent application.  It needs to be done, and then it will need to be "refreshed" at some point in the future.
