Slow Internet connection on one computer of two

I do realize that my question may be impossible to answer, but I thought I'd try this knowlegeable forum anyway. Maybe someone has had the same experience.

I recently upgraded to a 100/10 fibre connection, but there is an odd issue. We've got two wired Win7/64bits computers in the family. One of them manages to keep a 92 - 97 Mb download speed, the other one only occasionally rises above 10 - 12 Mb and never higher than 60 Mb, according to various speedtests. Upload speed is the same for both comps, an expected average of 9.3 Mb

I've done the drill - scanning for malware, cleaning out junk and then testing in safe mode with the computer connected directly to the socket and everything else disconnected,  using an add-on free browser, but the result is the same. I feel justified in concluding that something is amiss in Windows.

 

What should I look for?

Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.
 
Checkmark the following checkboxes:
  List last 10 Event Viewer log
  List Installed Programs
  List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
 
Click Go and paste the content into your next post.
 
Also...please Publish a Snapshot using Speccy taking care to post the link of the snapshot in your next post.

   Go to Piriform's website, and download the free version on the left.  Click Download from Piriform.com (the FileHippo link requires an extra click). Or if you want to use a portable version of Speccy (which doesn't require installation), click the builds page link and download the portable version. You will now be asked where you want to save the file. The best place to put it is the Desktop, as it will be easy to find later.

    After the file finishes downloading, you are ready to run Speccy. If you downloaded the installer, simply double-click on it and follow the prompts until installation is complete. If you downloaded the portable version, you will need to unzip it before use. Right-click the ZIP file and click Extract all. Click Next. Open up the extracted folder and double-click on Speccy.
 
     Once inside Speccy, it will look similar to this (with your computer's specifications, of course):

     Now, at the top, click File > Publish Snapshot.

     Click Yes > then Copy to Clipboard

Now, once you are back in the forum topic you are posting in, click the ADD REPLY or REPLY TO THIS TOPIC button. Right-click in the empty space of the Reply box and click Paste. Then, click Add Reply below the Reply box.

Create a New Account (takes less than a minute) and run the speed test from that account.  If the numbers are the same, you can assume it's system software or hardware, and if the numbers are different, you can assume it's an account-specific problem.  It's a troubleshooting technique, a way of dividing the possibilities in half in order to rule out half of them.

 

Also, run the speed tests on different browsers and see if it's a browser-specific problem.  If yes, then reinstall browser.

 

Another general "shoot the moon" fix is to simply uninstall your internet adapter and reinstall it.  If it works, you've saved gobs of time and trouble, and if it doesn't work you've wasted 5 minutes.

 

Also check Event Viewer, pay attention to "Applications" and "System".  Look for chronic (numerous, constant, repetitive) errors or serious errors (wailing, crying and begging for mercy are usually pretty good indicators it's serious) particularly those that have something to do with your internet.  "DCOM" errors are my computer's favorite.

 

Is the slow computer connected via wireless or LAN?  If wireless, connect a LAN cable and see if numbers change.  If yes you have a wireless issue (wireless adapter or Wireless modem, router or whatever) and if no then well I don't know what then.  If your wireless and your LAN are both equally flaky then we'll know something strange and sometimes strange data like that points to problem much clearer than does "ambiguous" or "general" data.

Wait I didn't see any mention of VPN previously. That adds a new dimension.

 

First, it sounds like things are "fixed" now?  that no-VPN on computer A is the same as no-VPN of computer B, and both of those speeds are what your ISP is supposed to be providing (based on your "package" and what you are paying)?

 

If yes, then 2nd is VPN A the same as VPN B (it would be a good idea to test using the same VPN Server)?

 

Finally, do you still think you have a problem?  Just for clarity.

No New Dimensions here....

 

Thats why "Hamluis" asked for a MTB Report , that showed application errors  pertaining to a VPN App.

 

Dont think OP has an issue now with required speed with setting - No VPN Mode.

 

Using VPN has too many variances with related speed issues but thats another topic.

I recently upgraded to a 100/10 fibre connection, but there is an odd issue. We've got two wired Win7/64bits computers in the family. One of them manages to keep a 92 - 97 Mb download speed, the other one only occasionally rises above 10 - 12 Mb and never higher than 60 Mb, according to various speedtests. Upload speed is the same for both comps, an expected average of 9.3 Mb

 

No New Dimensions here....

 

OP never said if VPN was running during the speed discrepancies.

I wasn't very clear about testing conditions, sorry about that. Yes, all testing was done without VPN (of course). That's why I'm puzzled as to why reinstalling Open VPN affects no-VPN speed (if that's what really happened). Speed is equal for both computers now, 70-97 Mb depending on what servers they're tested against and possibly the time of day. Only the problematic one uses VPN, and the speed issue is thus resolved to some extent. VPN speed is altogether another question, and something I have to discuss with the provider, who is also my ISP.

The problem was the very low speed of my fibre connection, whether using VPN or not. Seeing there was some issue with Open VPN I reinstalled it and after that connection speed (without VPN) turned out to be ok. I can't imagine there's a causal link, but I'm happy anyway. So yes, the problem is partially solved. As for the VPN, my old DSL connection at a nominal 8/2 Mb speed made 7.8/1.9 in average, VPN or no VPN, so I should take it up with the provider's support first of all. If that doesn't help, as is often the case with official help desks, I promise I'll be back here.

As for the VPN, my old DSL connection at a nominal 8/2 Mb speed made 7.8/1.9 in average, VPN or no VPN, so I should take it up with the provider's support first of all. If that doesn't help, as is often the case with official help desks, I promise I'll be back here.

 

 

But that doesn't explain why one computer was slow and the other computer was not.  They shared the same "fibre" connection so both speeds should have both been slow, or normal but not one slow and the other normal.  Until there is a good explanation for this, it's possible you have an intermittent problem, meaning it can come back again.

 

Unless the OpenVPN reinstallation happened on the slow computer, and afterwards it was normal again?

Obviously these to PCs are not Identical 100% in build and Parts.

So it may be Hardware differences or Driver Issues...

 

Time will tell ! 

OP can Post back if issues arise again ? 

 

As for now the issue seems resolved...Glad we could Help to some extent.
