Your updates should not break at all.  I assume there is a troll waiting in the CVS tree.  Anyways I always sudo passwd when I install linux and I have no issues with the CVS tree, updates, installing programs, and all the "boogers" that are left in apt-get

Also, make sure to add the Operating system Version and your printer Model, whether or not you need Wifi and Scanning.

Did you already download and install a printer driver because that's what it looks like to me?  If you read that post you would see there is no need to download drivers for that Printer, they should be contained in the Distro, depening on which Distro it is.

I did download brother 2860dw drivers since the first few times it wasn't available on the Linux mint 18 cinnamon synaptic. Had same situation in the past with same driver unavailable asking me to use 2840 drivers without duplex. Clean install Linux mint 18 one week ago. Need I delete some boogymen?

I can't help getting rid of the ppa maybe someone else can help with that.

Do you still have the drivers so that we know what they are and if they are needed or not?  Right Click Choose Properties and copy past the driver info here, and the link if you still have it.

It appears you did not download them from Brother, is that correct?  We will try to get them from Brother if not included in Distro.

I can't find that printer, except for one Samsung with same model number, is that the exact Full Model Number and Title?

What Distro 18-18.1 64bit?
