Hello all,

 

I've had a pesky problem running games for quite some time now (in the order of a few years) and I'm hoping you can help.

 

Currently I have what I believe are two major issues, one long-standing and another that is recent (I am guessing brought on by the latest W10 Creator's update).

Mobo: Asrock Extreme 4 Z87

RAM: G.Skill Sniper 2x4GB 1866Mhz

CPU: i5-4670K, not OC'ed but has been for short periods previously

GPU: Gigabyte GTX 780 Windforce OC

PSU: Corsair 80Plus Gold 850W

SSD: SanDisk UltraPlus 128GB - OS and some software only. Games and most software are installed

HD: Seagate Barracuda 1TB - Most software and all games installed on this drive.

 

Long-standing issue

For a long time I have had GPU instability issues whenever I update past Nvidia driver 340.52. With this driver I could generally run games stabley (e.g. Arma 2 & 3, Chivalry: Medieval Warfare, Rocket League, and even BF1 more recently) , although it would struggle with newer ones (e.g. Rainbow 6: Siege was hit and miss, I also attempted to play the Divison beta, and GTA V would crash at a certain point of the introduction).

 

My approach to this has been to simply stick with 340.52 and play games that run fine. Recently this is becoming less of an option as games take a massive performance hit without the new drivers and are increasingly barring you from play if you don't have a current driver.

 

The problems I've encountered have been the following (when attempting to run on new drivers):

  • Initially, but for some reason not recently: game would either freeze and continue, freeze permanently and stop responding, or crash to desktop. Each of these would usually be accompanied by a "display driver has stopped responding and has recovered" error.
  • Currently, if I install the latest driver, games will receive a performance boost but become unstable. For example Squad will get an FPS boost of 20+ and run for anywhere between a few to 15 minutes before crashing to desktop with no error displayed. I haven't received the "display driver has stopped responding and has recovered" error in a long time.

There is no clear link between crashing and graphical intensity, areas or stages of games, RAM usage, CPU usage, or GPU usage, or any temps as best as I can tell.

 

Things I have tried:

  • Under/over-clocking CPU.
  • Under-clocking GPU (although this I gather is in vain due to something called GPU Boost)
  • Increasing fan speeds
  • Changing PCI Express slot for video card
  • Updating drivers using DDR to various versions, with and without things like GeForce experience, Physx, etc. I generally do a clean install of just the video driver by itself.
  • Editing TdrDelay in registry
  • Changing power management settings to high performance

Things I have tested:

  • Ran memtest86
  • Heaven GPU Benchmark - completes but hangs using both old and new drivers. When it hangs it is not just an FPS drop but a sort of "flicker" to a black screen, pause, and then back to the benchmark scenes. This will happen several times throughout the benchmark. FYI GPU reaches about 74C while running this.

Potentially of interest to you:

  • Running new drivers will cause WebGL to "hit a snag" when looking at Satellite view in Google Maps.
  • No issues with watching/streaming videos of any resolution.

Recent issue

Recently, despite running the old/stable driver (340.52) I've been experiencing CPU spikes. Thus far I've only experienced this with Rocket League, but the spikes will either make the game hang or crash it to desktop with a process has stopped responding error. The only thing I can think of that would've caused this is the W10 Creator's update 1703.

 

I haven't tried anything to fix this yet other than disable CPU OC (I had clocked it to 4.4GHz as part of trying to fix my other problem), and this did not change anything. I can at least guarantee that this one is linked to CPU usage. It will go up to 100% for a period of a second or so and then either return to normal (I can continue playing) or crash to desktop.

 

 

I hope I've provided a sufficient amount of information. Please let me know if there's anything else I can provide that would be informative.

Have you tried updating your https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/2977003/the-latest-supported-visual-c-downloads

 

I updated all mine last year when I started having game crashing issues and I haven't had a problem since.

Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.
 
Checkmark the following checkboxes:
  List last 10 Event Viewer log
  List Installed Programs
  List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
 
Click Go and paste the content into your next post.
 
Also...please Publish a Snapshot using Speccy taking care to post the link of the snapshot in your next post.

   Go to Piriform's website, and download the free version on the left.  Click Download from Piriform.com (the FileHippo link requires an extra click). Or if you want to use a portable version of Speccy (which doesn't require installation), click the builds page link and download the portable version. You will now be asked where you want to save the file. The best place to put it is the Desktop, as it will be easy to find later.

    After the file finishes downloading, you are ready to run Speccy. If you downloaded the installer, simply double-click on it and follow the prompts until installation is complete. If you downloaded the portable version, you will need to unzip it before use. Right-click the ZIP file and click Extract all. Click Next. Open up the extracted folder and double-click on Speccy.
 
     Once inside Speccy, it will look similar to this (with your computer's specifications, of course):

     Now, at the top, click File > Publish Snapshot.

     Click Yes > then Copy to Clipboard

Since you clean installed yesterday...the data provided doesn't tell me much.

 

Your compressed memory, TiWorker.exe, and Windows Defender processes...seem out ot whack with peak RAM usage...your system has a problem with RocketLeague.exe..  Compressed memory, tiworker.exe, and Windows Defender...are all W10 processes, with documented problematical situations.

 

Frankly...I don't know why this is posted as an internal hardware problem...there seems to be no corroborating evidence that I can interpret..

Hi Louis, thanks for your help. I thought I posted this topic in the "Computer Gaming" section. Do you mean I've posted it in an internal hardware area or that my post implies it is a hardware problem? In any case, is there a better place for me to post, or do you otherwise have any suggestions about what I might try next?

My error...it was in Computer Gaming and I moved it to IH, since many of the topics in Computer Gaming seem to me to be hardware questions (drivers, etc.).  I don't think that you will find answers to your situation there...I could be wrong.

 

I don't see enough data to convince that there is a problem with anything other than RocketLeague and/or Windows 10.  If I had to pick one for a place to start, I would have begun with a post in the W10 Support forum, since those errors are documented.
