Hello, I'm currently trying to watch German television online (www.zdf.de), but on most things when I try to open the player a message pops up saying "Due to legal reasons this can only be viewed inside of Germany." I tried using a TOR browser and routing through a German IP, but it still wouldn't work.

Does anyone know of a way I can view this site from the USA? I have Linux Mint if that makes any difference.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can help me:)

Here's an example of a video that can't be played outside Germany: https://www.zdf.de/dokumentation/zdfinfo-doku/aufgedeckt-die-heilige-lanze-106.html

The message in the orange box says "This can only be shown in Germany."

My only guess would be using a VPN that makes it appear as though you are in Germany.

What is a VPN? Is that something the average person can accomplish?

We have the same problem in the UK.

When on holiday in other European countries it's not possible to watch UK TV or UK catch up programmes, without using a VPN.

Many seem to make it work OK.

The BBC recently added software to their iPlayer site to block the use of VPNs to watch their iPlayer from outside the UK. To add insult to this injury even inside the UK you now have to have a TV license to watch iPlayer - well at least you have to click the button that says you have a license or it won't run.

Interestingly there are proposals currently going through the EU parliamentary system to ban geoblocking inside the EU which might resolve this problem - at least for the Germans among us. It probably won't help those of us suffering from Brexit !

I found one that works but it's expensive. Does anyone know of a free VPN that works with Linux?

@aj77 #8

You would be better asking that question in the Linux section.
