My friend asked me to clean up her computer -- was loaded with trojans and spyware, and constantly getting popups. This computer did not have any anti-spyware or antivirus protection, so I installed and cleaned (best I could) with avast! antivirus, Spybot S&D and AdAware. All three return clean results now, but I suspect there still is malicios software running from start-up.

Also, I wanted to do an SP2 update, but want to make sure the ystem is clean, first.

Another thing I noticed is that at startup, there's always an open MyDocuments folder. I don't know what causes this.

Hello dbaryl, and welcome to BleepingComputer. My name is Charles and I will be dealing with your log today.

Please take note of the following:
  • I will start working on your Malware issues, this may or may not, solve other issues you have with your machine.
  • The fixes are specific to your problem and should only be used for this issue on this machine
  • The process is not instant. Please continue to review my answers until I tell you your machine is clear. Absence of symptoms does not mean that everything is clear.
  • If you don't know, stop and ask! Don't keep going on.
  • Please reply to this thread. Do not start a new topic.
Please give me some time to look over your log and I will get back to you as soon as possible.
Thanks,
Charles

Hello dbaryl, sorry for the delay in getting back to you.

======

Firstly, I know you mentioned that you wanted to wait before the update to Service Pack 2, which is good because installing this update on an infected computer can cause a lot of problems. However, please can you update to Service Pack 1a now at the following link:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloa...p1/default.mspx

======

Update Java:
  • Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on the Software icon > add/remove programs.
  • Search in the list for all previous installed versions of Java. (J2SE Runtime Environment.... )

    It should have this icon next to it: Posted Image
    Select it and click Remove.
  • The current version can be downloaded from Sun here: http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp Scroll down the page to 'Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 5.0 Update 8' and press the 'Download' button. On the new web page, click the 'Accept License Agreement' button. Then select 'Windows Offline Installation, Multi-language' in the Windows Platform area just below the Accept button.
======

Open HijackThis
- Click the Config... button, then go to the Misc Tools section.
- Click on Open Uninstall Manager. You'll see a list of programs.
- Click on Save List...

The file "uninstall_list.txt" will be created. Copy and paste the contents of this file to your next reply.

======

Please download Qoofix by RubbeR DuckY from one of the following locations:

http://www.malwarebytes.org/Qoofix.zip or
http://www.besttechie.net/tools/Qoofix.zip
  • Unzip all files to a convenient location such as C:\Qoofix.
  • Go to the folder you unzipped all files and run Qoofix.exe.
  • Click Begin Removal and wait for the scan to finish.
  • If an infection has been found, select yes to restart your computer.
======

Please post back with the following (note: it may require more than one reply to get it all in):
- New HijackThis log
- Uninstall list
- Qoofix log

Thanks,
Charles
