After not having used Microsoft Update in a while, I went to use and and got the following message.

http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/

Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage

The solution I found was to use the following link

https://update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate/v6/default.aspx

This has an expired security certificate. Click on Continue to this website (not recommended). Along the top bar at the right hand side click on Windows Update. This will update Windows Update and a new link (with a different image) is placed on your start menu. You can then download any critical updates.
