Hello!

Windows 10 with Creators Update.

I did an uninstall of Avia Antivirus following their website instructions, it is still showing as 'on' in Security Virus Protection.

I'd appreciate a tutorial as to how to stop Avira from controlling my AV protection and turn on Windows Defender. I am not able to find the setting.

Thank you!

Did you reboot after uninstalling Avira? Sometimes rebooting a couple of times after uninstalling a third-party anti-virus prompts Windows Defender to start.

Are these the instructions you followed?
How do I uninstall my Avira product?
Instructions for manual uninstallation of Avira

Avira use to have a cleaning utility on their Avira Download Center website but it has been removed. However, the Avira RegistryCleaner Direct Download link still works but I'm not sure it can be used with newer versions. I would WAIT on running that tool until some of our Avira users have a chance to weight in.

Hi QM7!

Avira Update, this was a pill to uninstall! With each failed attempt below, the program would return to Programs and Features, a shortcut on the desktop and an icon in the task bar next to the clock.

Numerous failed attempts to uninstall via:

  • Avira standard uninstall procedure (from your first link:) (Did a reboot after each attempt)
  • Avira Registry Cleaner
  • Revo Uninstaller
  • Deleting from the registry

Finally I had success by:

1. Following the manual uninstall (https://www.avira.com/en/support-for-home-knowledgebase-detail/kbid/902)

2. Booting into Windows 10 safe mode (https://www.avira.com/en/support-for-home-knowledgebase-detail/kbid/1778)

3. Renaming Avira in the Program86 folder and Program Data folder.

4. Rebooting into Safe Mode, I was successfully able to delete the folders!

As soon as Avira was successfully uninstalled, Windows Defender turned back on.

Note: The Avira Registry Cleaner would not function in safe mode, but it did so when I returned to Windows 10 normal mode.

Thank you for your assistance!

Well that was quite a lot to have to do just to remove a program. Anyway, glad to hear you were successful.
