I had a Chromium and a redirection pup called ByteFence.

Adwcleaner and Malwarebytes can't find anything anymore, but rkill still does.

  • Double click on the FRST icon and allow it to run.
  • Agree to the usage agreement and FRST will open. Do not make any changes and click on the Scan button.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Post the new logs as explained in the prep guide.

Hello, thanks for re-opening my topic.

I have found the file and I can edit and delete the entries. The question is, should I?

My computer expert told me these 0.0.0.0 are redirections to nowhere. So does this file do any harm?

If I edit them, maybe that's when the redirection comes back?

Thank you

Edit rkill only showed a selection

I have already deleted the first two

 0.0.0.0 tracking.opencandy.com.s3.amazonaws.com

to try if it works, I haven't had any problems

Hi,

0.0.0.0 is a non-routable meta-address used to designate an invalid, unknown, or non-applicable target (a ‘no particular address’ place holder). In the context of a route entry, it usually means the default route. Which mean those sites will be redirected to 0.0.0.0 instead of their malicious server. This is a trick to stop connecting to the malicious servers.

Valinorum

Thank you for your answering.

Does that mean that if I delete these entries from my host file, I get reinfected?

Should I just leave it like it is now? And should I put the two entries I already removed back?

Hi,

The infection will occur if you actually visit those sites and download any infected piece of malware. The host file modification is more of a preventive safety measure that ensures that even if you do somehow click on those sites, they cannot be accessed.

You can put those lines back but the first line is just a rerouting making sure that 0.0.0.0 is not set to anything else second one like the most other entries in your host file.

Regards,

Valinorum
