Hello,

I've been having problems with windows update for several months now (using Windows 7 SP1 64 bits): I can download and install most updates, except for the monthly security quality rollups. When I try to install these, windows update seem to download them up to 11% and then reports that installation failed, with error code 80073712. Kept putting off dealing with this, but the latest ransomware attacks finally prompted me to action.

So, I've tried everything described here (details below). After nothing worked I tried to download the update from Microsoft Update Catalog and run it as a standalone. This also failed. Looking at the windows update log file I saw the error number 80248014. (I'm attaching the log file below). I am not sure what to try next...

So here are the details.

  1. I ran sfc /scannow, and got a message that "Windows resource protection did not find any integrity violations".
  2. I ran Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth (log file below). I also tried to run Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth (as recommended in the above link), but got an error 87 message "the restorehealth option is not recognized in this context".
  3. I then ran the Microsoft Fixit 50202.
  4. Finally, I ran the system update readiness tool.

I am attaching below the following (I saw that these were helpful in similar threads):

  • windows update log
  • cbs0.txt is a copy of the cbs.log file created after running the sfc /scannow, and before running the system update readiness tool.
  • dism.log, CheckSUR.log and CheckSUR.persist.log, after running the dism.
  • cbs.txt is a copy of the cbs.log created after running the Fixit + SURT. The file is too big to attach, so it is available via one drive here: https://1drv.ms/t/s!AtaynxLXF4vha8n7gcgYzwBpLAM.

I would greatly appreciate any help. I would really rather not have to re-install the operating system if possible. If anything else is needed please let me know.

Thanks!

Ori.

Try downloading the latest cumulative updates

latest Win 7 offline updates link

https://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=KB4019264

If KB4019264 doesnt work, try the april then may

Then rerun your windows update, see if that helps

Thanks very much for your help, votayer!

Following your suggestion, I tried again now (I had also tried this before) to download these updates from the microsoft update catalog, but the updates are not installed. For example, I've just tried again KB4019264 (the May security monthly quality rollup). I get the message "Some of the updates were not installed" and a list containing only KB4019264 (the only update I tried to install). Below I'm including the relevant part of the windows update log, where I can see the following error codes: 0x80073712, 0x80240022, and 0x80248014.

The same thing had happened when I tried to download and run the March security only rollup from the microsoft update catalog. Rerunning the windows update yields the same error as before (80073712).

What should be the next step in this situation?

Thanks!

Ori.

Thanks again for the suggestion. I have deleted the cache as explained, but the problem remains (I get exactly the same error message).

I forgot to mention in my original post that I had previously tried almost all methods mentioned in the link you provided, including running the windows update troubleshooter, and installing KB3020369 and KB3172605. None of these seemed to help with my problem.

I'd be happy to hear any further suggestions.

Thanks!

Ori.
