In case anyone's missed, Microsoft have today (13 May) released a patch for XP SP3 to address the vulnerability exploited by WanaCrpyt0r:

http://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=KB4012598

Dilemma... This has obviously been rushed out to address yesterday's global attack and not at all sure how my system will cope with it.

Has anyone already applied the patch?

I have applied this patch on my spare XP sp3 machine. Very quick install with a reboot required.

No problems at all.

Update is listed in add/remove programs (show win updates ticked)

Win updates is still turned off in Security Center afterwards.

Re: WannaCrypt patch. Security Update for Windows XP SP3 (KB4012598)

Tried to download patch @: http://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/search.aspx?q=4012598

The file I downloaded is: windowsxp-kb4012598-x86-custom-enu_eceb7d5023bbb23c0dc633e46b9c2f14fa6ee9dd.exe

But I can’t install it because I have WIN XP version in Spanish installed and apparently the file is for the WINXP SP3 English version.

I then tried the Microsoft site for Mexico: https://www.microsoft.com/es-mx/search/result.aspx?q=kb4012598%20download

and followed the options provided ...  https://www.microsoft.com/es-mx/download/details.aspx?id=55245

The file that downloads is : WindowsXP-KB4012598-x86-Embedded-Custom-ESN

I can't install it either and instead receive the following error message: "The Windows version installed does not coincide with the update you are attempting to install".

My OS is:

OS Name : Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 3

OS Language : Español (México)

OS Type : 32 bit

Any idea what I am doing wrong?

Appreciate your help.

For XP disabling the ports shown in the below link will prevent the Wanacrypt worm. Always be careful editing the registry and backup it up before editing.

Yes there seems to be an issue with the download. To get the correct download you can head to the following URL:

http://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/Search.aspx?q=KB4012598

Then you'll be able to download the localized version for your OS.

I noticed that the Windows XP POS had the patch available in March so if a person uses the POS registry hack they most likely are already patched. Notice the Patch for XP and XP POS have the exact same Kb number and size. Microsoft really did a disservice by not providing the patch to XP in March as they did for XP POS.

Thanks for the direct link to the Windows Update Catalog.

This URL is the one where I attempted to download even though I first checked Spanish  on this screen http://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/ScopedViewInline.aspx?updateid=9e189800-f354-4dc8-8170-7bd0ad7ca09a

I am unable to install  because the language (I  suppose English) does not match my system (Spanish). Am I doing something wrong?  Any other ideas?

(tried to place image of screen where I first chose language but it was rejected on this post)

I was able to download the spanish version of KB4012598.

If you wish I can give you a dropbox link.

Use IE and go to the Windows Update Catalog site in an admin account. Select the patch file. Press Add and then go to the basket. In the Basket click on the patch link on the left. Uncheck English and select Spanish. Press update Basket. You should then be able to download the Spanish version.

You will need to do this in Windows 7 or later. If you only have XP I can attach the patch file.

Persistent as I am, I tried the link you gave me but this time I tried it using IE ( I was using Firefox and that was probably the problem). It still didn't work.

First it showed I received the following message: service unavailable; probably everyone is trying to download the patch. I then tried http://www.catalog.update.microsoft.com/ alone, and searched for KB4012598 and IE switched to spanish automatically and I received the following message , originally in Spanish, which I've translated:

The website has encountered a problem

[error: 8DDD0010]

There's a problem with the page you are searching for and not available for viewing.
Try the following:
Contact your web administrator and inform them of this error on the web page.

After all this, I failed to note that you specifically noted that  I need to have Windows 7 and since I only have WIN XP installed, I will greatly appreciate the dropbox link for the patch file in Spanish.

Thanks so much.

I too get the error message "The Windows version installed does not coincide with the update you are attempting to install".

I have Windows XP Professional SP3 x86, and I'm downloading/trying to install the file WindowsXP-KB4012598-x86-Embedded-Custom-ESN (the Spanish version).

Anyone know what I'm doing wrong? thanks for your help!

To install the update, you must be a local administrator!

You can also start the update as administrator from you account.
On the file, right click and there chose "Run as..."

But in any case you need to know the login and password of the local administrator.

Is there any way of getting the patch file for a system in Spanish without using IE?
