There's an HP Scanjet G3010 connected to my uncle's computer with the following specs:

- Processor: Intel Celeron 325

- RAM: 1gb

- Hard Drive: 128gb

- O.S. : Windows XP 32 bits

The thing is, I used WIA support with Photoshop in order to scan anything and after getting the digital picture in photoshop, there where a lot of horizontal magenta lines across the picture in the middle and bottom.

Also, I noticed that using something to put under the scanner so it scans in 45 degree angle, considerably reduces the quantity of horizontal lines, but some still appear.

I believe the problem lies in the Scanjet, and so I was planning on trying the follow video () since I believe it's just dirty.

However, I'd like some input in order to be able to fix this scanner.

Pd: I don't know how old the scanner nor the computer is, nonetheless, they seem to be more than 3 years old.

Pd2: I'll attach  a .jpg file of an scan with these lines so that the issue is more understandable.

Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:
List last 10 Event Viewer log
  List Installed Programs
List Users, Partitions and Memory size.

Click Go and paste the content into your next post.

Also...please Publish a Snapshot using Speccy taking care to post the link of the snapshot in your next post.

Go to Piriform's website, and download the free version on the left.  Click Download from Piriform.com (the FileHippo link requires an extra click). Or if you want to use a portable version of Speccy (which doesn't require installation), click the builds page link and download the portable version. You will now be asked where you want to save the file. The best place to put it is the Desktop, as it will be easy to find later.

After the file finishes downloading, you are ready to run Speccy. If you downloaded the installer, simply double-click on it and follow the prompts until installation is complete. If you downloaded the portable version, you will need to unzip it before use. Right-click the ZIP file and click Extract all. Click Next. Open up the extracted folder and double-click on Speccy.

Once inside Speccy, it will look similar to this (with your computer's specifications, of course):

post-33068-0-86653600-1480692866_thumb.j

Now, at the top, click File > Publish Snapshot.

Click Yes > then Copy to Clipboard

Now, once you are back in the forum topic you are posting in, click the ADD REPLY or REPLY TO THIS TOPIC button. Right-click in the empty space of the Reply box and click Paste. Then, click Add Reply below the Reply box.

Do the lines always appear in the same place on every scan? Generally, if the scanner has some dirt issues, then the lines or spots will appear in the same place. Plus, they usually will not be magenta in color, but rather black (at least in my experience). If the lines move from scan to scan, then it might be software related.

Does the same thing happen if you use the scanning software that came with the scanner (unless the Photoshop plug-in was the only option...had a REALLY old scanner awhile ago that came with Photoshop, back before it was super expensive, and used a plug-in to scan directly to Photoshop...if memory serves)?

The magenta lines, honestly, suggest to me that it is likely software related.

I have had precisely the same issue on a Canon scanner and it was definitely "dirt related" for a special form of dirt.

Some small moth or similar somehow crawled midway across the scanner bar itself and decided to make its cocoon there.  It resulted in an orange-ish line on color scans because that's the tint the cocoon had when the scanner lights shone through it.

I doubt that this specific thing is your problem, but it's worth doing a scan with the lid open so that you can take a look at the scanner bar when its in motion to see if you can see any obvious schmutz of some sort in a specific spot on the bar.

It could be deducted that the lines always appear in the same parts (center and bottom parts); however, the volume or to be more precise, the quantity of lines that appear change with the scanner inclination. That makes me think it's hardware related.

Also, I've been told that this scanner used to have no problems at all one year ago. I don't think they changed the drivers or sth related.

I recently cleaned the pc which the scanner is connected to (the problem existed even before this), besides, I had to install the scanner drivers again and the problem persisted.

I don't think this scanner came with photoshop; nevertheless, it works with a plug-in called WIA, using it to scan directly to photoshop. I've tried scanning by using only the scanner functions, and there was no difference.

Although I just did what you suggested, I wasn't able to recognize any notorius dirt while the scanner bar was in motion.

I haven't tried to clean it yet, but I will in a few days.

You have a number of potential isssues...I would start with uninstalling all the HP software and reinstalling same.

I don't understand why you added that link since my problem does not include any crash.

I'll make sure to uninstall and install again. I'll keep you updated.

PD: The drivers I have installed atm were downloaded from the hp support page itself.

I reinstalled the drivers.

Here are some samples to help you see the results.

This picture was taken using the scanner software only in normal position (0° rotated).

This picture was taken using the scanner software only with inclination (45° rotated).

I guess this could be used to try and identify the problem with more certainty.

Sorry but those graphics don't tell me anything...my problems with scanners/printers has been (fortunately) limited to simple circumstances which I could correct by simple procedures.

If anything more complicated occurred to me...I would probably just replace the hardware, considering availability/pricing in effect today.

I don't see Photoshop installed...yet you reflect Photoshop processes.  In any case, your system does not seem to like the PS processes, looking at the Event Viewer errors.

I second the suggestion by hamluis to consider replacing the scanner.  The ScanJet series (unless the name has been revived and, if so, I've not seen it) is ancient now and if there are no dirt issues and different drivers are giving you similar results (and it appears they are) you most likely have a hardware issue.  This is not surprising in an old scanner.

Good quality multi-function machines for "basic scanning and copying" that far exceed the capabilities of the old ScanJet series (except for the flatbed size) are available so cheaply now that expending great amounts of time and effort on really old equipment is generally not worth the expenditure of either.

I'm sorry for the confusion I caused. I'm using a portable version of photoshop, that's why it didn't appear installed.

I guess buying new hardware would be the best option. Another friend of mine suggested so too.

My last effort will be to clean it and that'll be the last update I'll give you so that I can close this topic sucessfully.

My next update will be up in a few days. (probably on saturday).

Thanks for your help.

I agree that these tend to rule out a software problem.

So, that likely means it is either a dirt/cleaning issue or maybe just a plain old hardware issue (i.e. malfunctioning optical sensor, etc).

I forget...have you tried a different cable (I assume USB)? This would just rule out it is not some issue with the cable...I admit it is not likely.

So, if your attempt at cleaning it does not help, then I tend to agree it might be time for a new scanner. As others have noted, you can get cheap all-in-one inkjet printers that include at least the ability to scan 8.5"x11" sheets for rather cheap. These days they sell inkjet printers (even ones that include scanners) for really cheap amount with the intention of then making the money on the ink cartridges. So, if the thing is going to be primarily used for scanning (and not printing), then it is a good cheap option for a scanner. If you need a larger scanning surface, then it will get more expensive.

I have to admit that the cable has been treated horribly, it might even be damaged; however, I don't have a replacement for it.

Following the samples logically (and through pure guessing), I don't think the USB cable might be the problem.

If I'm buying a new scanner, I'll go for a simple A4 surface.

If it is a USB cable, then it might be worth checking. USB cables are pretty cheap (cheaper than a new scanner or printer). Even if that is not the problem, then you will have a spare USB cable sitting around if you ever need it and it is a good idea to have at least one spare around.
