I have a Dell laptop, Windows 7, Avast Internet Security

The arrow is stuck in the middle of the screen. I wanted to run a virus scan, my Avast comes up, but since the arrow won't move I can't click on anything to get a scan started.

So I go to safe mode and safe mode with networking, but when I try to bring up Avast I get, ''UI failed to load, this is embarrassing. AV service is not responding.''

I had to use Avastclear to uninstall Avast IS, then I reinstalled, same problem. Then I uninstalled Avast IS again and installed Avast free, same problem.

When I'm in normal mode Avast loads, but I can't move the arrow to use it. My other Dell laptop, also using Avast IS, is working fine.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks.

marber

Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:
List last 10 Event Viewer log
  List Installed Programs
List Users, Partitions and Memory size.

Click Go and paste the content into your next post.

Also...please Publish a Snapshot using Speccy taking care to post the link of the snapshot in your next post.

Go to Piriform's website, and download the free version on the left.  Click Download from Piriform.com (the FileHippo link requires an extra click). Or if you want to use a portable version of Speccy (which doesn't require installation), click the builds page link and download the portable version. You will now be asked where you want to save the file. The best place to put it is the Desktop, as it will be easy to find later.

After the file finishes downloading, you are ready to run Speccy. If you downloaded the installer, simply double-click on it and follow the prompts until installation is complete. If you downloaded the portable version, you will need to unzip it before use. Right-click the ZIP file and click Extract all. Click Next. Open up the extracted folder and double-click on Speccy.

Once inside Speccy, it will look similar to this (with your computer's specifications, of course):

post-33068-0-86653600-1480692866_thumb.j

Now, at the top, click File > Publish Snapshot.

Click Yes > then Copy to Clipboard

Now, once you are back in the forum topic you are posting in, click the ADD REPLY or REPLY TO THIS TOPIC button. Right-click in the empty space of the Reply box and click Paste. Then, click Add Reply below the Reply box.

Check that you haven't accidentally disabled your trackpad - usually the Fn key plus one of the F keys toggles this on and off. I can't say which key it is, it varies from one laptop to the next but look for a symbol that is either two trackpads side by side or a trackpad and a mouse, probably with one of these symbols marked inactive.

If you have not accidentally turned it off then try an external USB mouse, it may be your trackpad or its drivers have died.

Louis,

Thanks for your help. You gave great instructions. I had to transfer this info from one laptop to another via flash drive.

I see the previous speccy link didn't work. I'm unable to right click and paste, so I'm typing it in.

Edit

I see this one doesn't work either. I was unable to paste the link to a post in safe mode on the problem laptop, but I

could paste it to a notepad and put it on a flash drive.

Without the Speccy data, this is just guess work...but your errors and failed drivers all point to inability for Avast to function and inability to update.  IMO, those may be signs of malware.

I also see that you are utilizing a network boot...how and why?  A standalone system reflects a network boot typically only when Windows is installed by manufacturer or the CMOS battery is failing.

Louis,

I may have gotten the speccy link correct this time.

I ran adwclean, found 2 things, cleaned, but problem remains.

I followed Chris Cosgrove's suggestion, ended up actually updating the driver. Thanks, Chris. But problem remains.

As for the network boot, I don't understand. My knowledge of computers is very limited. This laptop belongs to a friend whose computer knowledge is much, much less than mine. Her brother gave her this laptop, it wasn't working properly. I ran virus and malware scans, cleaned it up, and she only uses it for Facebook. She's been using it for 2 or 3 years, now.

To be honest...I cannot make sense of the data.

No hotfixes at all listed via Speccy..

Windows install date of 2010...with no hotfixes installed in 7 years...seems highly unlikely.

Network boot on a standalone system.

I can't suggest anything useful.

Louis.
