Mod Edit:  Split from https://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/324088/need-help-with-upgrading-for-better-gaming-performance/ - Hamluis.

So I am just reviving the deadthread to put in an update: Someone brought me this computer yesterday to service and review for upgrades.

I recommended:

$40-$80 a full upgrade to 8GB of RAM

$89 an upgraded processor (Socket 478) (Best performing for the socket Intel Core 2 Extreme Quad QX9300)

(searched cpu-upgrade.com for CPU compatibles to it's GM45 chipset)

$68.99 240GB Sandisk SSD.

Windows 10 x86 is on it, so I will reload it as an x64 to take advantage of the 8GB of RAM, it readily recognized the 4GB and 2GB sticks but still only utilizes the 3GB that x86 allows and uses the other 1GB as allocated Video RAM.

For $203.99 in parts they're going to get a pretty fast computer compared to what it was. Considering their budget, and the price of a new moderately performing laptop, they saved about $200-$300 by upgrading rather than just replacing.

For $204 I'd recommend buying a refurbished machine, rather than the upgrade.  I limit my upgrades to GPU and RAM.  If you're replacing the CPU you probably should be looking at a new computer.
