Windows 7 runs OK in Safe Mode and hardly at all in Normal Mode

We have a Windows 7 Home Premium PC from Dell that just recently [last two weeks] started hanging in normal mode. IE will freeze, Windows Updates won't run, Mcafee Antivirus says it's up to date and doesn't find anything on a scan. This problem has moved beyond me at this point. I tried to roll it back to a previous day several months ago but it failed.

 

Please help!

Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.
 
Checkmark the following checkboxes:
  List last 10 Event Viewer log
  List Installed Programs
  List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
 
Click Go and paste the content into your next post.
 
Also...please Publish a Snapshot using Speccy taking care to post the link of the snapshot in your next post.

   Go to Piriform's website, and download the free version on the left.  Click Download from Piriform.com (the FileHippo link requires an extra click). Or if you want to use a portable version of Speccy (which doesn't require installation), click the builds page link and download the portable version. You will now be asked where you want to save the file. The best place to put it is the Desktop, as it will be easy to find later.

    After the file finishes downloading, you are ready to run Speccy. If you downloaded the installer, simply double-click on it and follow the prompts until installation is complete. If you downloaded the portable version, you will need to unzip it before use. Right-click the ZIP file and click Extract all. Click Next. Open up the extracted folder and double-click on Speccy.
 
     Once inside Speccy, it will look similar to this (with your computer's specifications, of course):

     Now, at the top, click File > Publish Snapshot.

     Click Yes > then Copy to Clipboard

Now, once you are back in the forum topic you are posting in, click the ADD REPLY or REPLY TO THIS TOPIC button. Right-click in the empty space of the Reply box and click Paste. Then, click Add Reply below the Reply box.

System reflects Windows install date of 2010...yet Speccy reflects no hotfixes (critical updates) as being installed.

 

Outdated Java installs.  Why should I remove older versions of Java from my system - http://www.java.com/en/download/faq/remove_olderversions.xml .

 

Boot normally.

 

Uninstall McAfee, install Microsoft Security Essentials and use the Windows firewall..  Update MSE, run a full scan, do NOT post the results here.

 

Run the chkdsk /r command on the C: partition.

 

Then post new MTB data and a new link to a current Speccy Snapshot.

It was suggested that I roll back to a previous date on this PC when this problem started, and the most recent was July 2016...that's probably why everything looks out of date. I am performing these steps now and will post what you asked for this morning. Thanks for the help!

Looks to me as if your CPU is overheating.  Temp reflected per Speccy is 71 Celsius...while the stated max for your CPU is 60 Celsius.

 

For some reason...there was no temp data provided on the first Speccy submittal.

 

I suggest verifying that CPU temp, using something like Hardware Info or SpeedFan.

I'm using Hardware Info this morning and it has been in the 59-69 Celsius range so far. It's been running for about 30 minutes. Keep it running?

Yeah, that means its overheating.   Have you opened the case and seen if there is a lot of dust clogging the fans and around the heatsink?

I have, and it's not very dusty at all inside. There is a thin layer on the bottom of the case but the fans are 95% clear.

System dates to 2010.  I don't know how long one can expect thermal paste to provide the protection expected...but I suspect that it may be time for removal/cleaning and a new coat.  Such cannot do any harm and may ameliorate possible/imagined overheating issues.

 

Your assertion that the system runs fine in safe mode...well, that baffles me.
