Hi,

Would like to blur and darken the background of a photo.

Do realize that can do this with PhotoShop but hope there may be some Free or Low Cost alternatives.

Appreciate any suggestions.

Thanks

Ken

I use Paint dot net.
It's no cost and plenty of support in the forum.
If its only a one time thing then you may want to ask for help to get it done quickly.

Martel,

Please excuse my delayed response as have been offline.

I have not used Paint so searched YouTube using paint.net tutorials blur and darken photo background  and found Paint.NET Tutorial: Recoloring B&W & blur background

Am wondering if this is how you would do it?

nickos,

"...try gimp with the necessary plugin filters"

Have not used Gimp so again searched YouTube using Gimp tutorials blur and darken photo background.

Was overwhelmed by number of tutorials.  https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=Gimp+tutorials+blur+and+darken+photo+background

Appreciate your recommendation concerning plugin(s) and technique(s).

Thanks

Ken

Ken,

That is a way to do it.
If you are just applying a blur to the background, duplicate the layer then apply the blur to the lower layer.
Continue to adjust the blur to the desired level.
Keep the focused area on top..you can uncheck the top layer till you get the blur just the way you want it.
When you get it to the desired effect save it.
turn the top layer on and do a save as like .jpg or whatever file type needed.
Then save that.
You can go back and continue adjustments by opening the .pdn file
