I have a lovely old workhorse Latitude D610.  For a little while, the adapter has been occasionally refusing to turn on when I plug it in -- the light doesn't come on and it makes a faint high-pitched beeping sound.  I could unplug and re-plug & it would come on ok.  I figured it might be wearing out; it's had a lot of hours.

Tonight I was using the computer on AC and unplugged it to move to another room.  When I plugged it in again, the adapter wouldn't come on at all, AND, the laptop was off too and would not turn on, with or without the adapter.  (I freaked, it's one of those "my life is on this computer" things... Yes, I will back up, again.)

I got an old adapter and it turned on, BUT, now the battery light is blinking 3 orange, 1 green.  It was working perfectly fine till now.  Two test-lights light up.  It says 96% and charging, and has for a while, so maybe not increasing.  QuickSet says the battery is performing normally.

I've googled... it looks like the battery may also need replacing but can someone explain why the adapter failure seems to have damaged my battery and why the computer doesn't tell me this?  :(

Update:  I put in an old 0% battery with the old adapter to see what happened; nothing remarkable, said it was charging but I didn't wait to see if it did.  After a few more attempts to plug it in, the bad(?) adapter is on, and working.  AND, the battery which was previously flashing orange now seems to be working fine too and says it's at 100%.

BUT, now the pointy-stick isn't working.  It glitched once upon a time before; I can't remember what I did to fix it.

??!?!?!!.... now I'm even more confused.  Can someone decipher what is going on... please and thanks?
