Hi,

SEO is the practice of increasing the quantity and quality of traffic to your website through organic search engine results.

SEM is the process of gaining website traffic by purchasing ads on search engines.

SEO results are unpaid results.SEM results are paid results.

Correctly mentioned by "WillGraham" about the full name but you need to understand that one is for optimization and another basically for marketing. The SEO can be closely related to optimizing the website for a particular readers, little promotions like link building whereas SEM is directly related to paid campaigns like PPC.

The difference between SEO and SEM is simply that Search Engine Optimization is part of Search engine marketing or Search marketing as it is widely known. Both processes aim in increasing visibility in search engines.
