Please tell me what to do!?

 

I have a 6 year old Toshiba A655 laptop using Windows Home Edition. Recently when I boot it is terminably slow. It takes a good 40 minutes and then the desktop top fills up bit by bit. But it is useless trying to click on anything as it is unresponsive. Eventually I have to turn it off with the on/off button.

 

In order to see what was slowing it down I went into Safe Mode and tried misconfig on Start/Search window. However this did not work so I selected System Configuration and then turned off everything. I restarted but the problem was just the same. I went into Safe Mode again and ran Malwarebytes but the scan was clear with no infections.

 

It has lagged during boot for the last few weeks but this looks like a complete operational freeze. It started behaving like this shortly after Windows automatic updates installed.

 

What advice can anyone give in order to find the culprit? I do not yet know whether it is a system issue or hardware. I would like to follow some guided diagnostic steps.

As far as I know the Hard Disk Drive is healthy and four years old. I do not know anything about the CPU but it does seem that some data is not getting through to make the correct boot.

 

Again, any advice or guidance would be most gratefully received. You are my only source of help as I am working overseas.

Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.
 
Checkmark the following checkboxes:
  List last 10 Event Viewer log
  List Installed Programs
  List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
 
Click Go and paste the content into your next post.
 
Also...please Publish a Snapshot using Speccy taking care to post the link of the snapshot in your next post.

   Go to Piriform's website, and download the free version on the left.  Click Download from Piriform.com (the FileHippo link requires an extra click). Or if you want to use a portable version of Speccy (which doesn't require installation), click the builds page link and download the portable version. You will now be asked where you want to save the file. The best place to put it is the Desktop, as it will be easy to find later.

    After the file finishes downloading, you are ready to run Speccy. If you downloaded the installer, simply double-click on it and follow the prompts until installation is complete. If you downloaded the portable version, you will need to unzip it before use. Right-click the ZIP file and click Extract all. Click Next. Open up the extracted folder and double-click on Speccy.
 
     Once inside Speccy, it will look similar to this (with your computer's specifications, of course):

     Now, at the top, click File > Publish Snapshot.

     Click Yes > then Copy to Clipboard

Now, once you are back in the forum topic you are posting in, click the ADD REPLY or REPLY TO THIS TOPIC button. Right-click in the empty space of the Reply box and click Paste. Then, click Add Reply below the Reply box.

OK Louis. I'll schedule Friday for this. Thank you. I'll have to try the downloads through Safe Mode with Networking or on this computer and transfer them somehow. Don't know how difficult that may be. I'll be back.

You should be able to uninstall the updates.

 

Unless you used Windows Update Cleanup.

Hi, I am on my I-phone. I started on Safe Mode but when I got Bleepingcomputer Login it froze, nothing worked and I had to turn off with button.

I'll try again. The wifi has recently been shutting down. I will verify.

Hello again, I tried to download MiniToolBox. Do I need to disable the firewall because that download did not appear to work. Instead an operation panel appeared. It was obviously incorrect so I shut down.

I am waiting for further guidance.

The instructions I provided...include all the guidance you need to provide the requested data.

 

If your system prevents your following those instructions...there's nothing I can do but believe that you may have either a malware or  a hardware problem.

before I try please confirm wether Farbar MinToolBox can be saved and run from a USB drive? I have already tried to download the tool several times from Safe Mode with Networking but it does not seem to download correctly.

I don't see anything that would point to malware...all processes look normal to me.

 

Is there a history of problems?  I ask because the Windows install reflects a date of Jul 2016, while the system itself is 6 years old, with the hard drive being 4 years old.

 

Another oddity is a total lack of Hotfixes/Windows Updates installed.  I've only seen that on 1 other system when reviewing Speccy data.  Windows Update is set to autodownload/install.
