My hard drive appears to be filling with things that I cannot find.

If I highlight everything in Computer > OS (C:) and right-click Properties, I get a total of 182 GB used.

But if I open "Computer" and look at "Hard Disk Drives (1)" it states: 416 GB free of 919 GB.  That means 503 GB are used.

I have been transferring files to DVD and deleting them from the hard drive ever since I noticed that I was using more than half the disk and yet each time I do this more space on the disk is used, not less.

I run CCleaner daily so I doubt the usual garbage is lying around uncounted.

Is "Computer" > "Hard Disk Drives (1)" imagining this or are there 321 GB being used on my hard drive that I cannot locate?

What can I do to answer this question and resolve this problem?

It would seem that I need to do this before my entire drive fills up.

Intel Core i7-6700 CPU A 3.40 GHz

Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:
List last 10 Event Viewer log
  List Installed Programs
List Users, Partitions and Memory size.

Click Go and paste the content into your next post.

Also...please Publish a Snapshot using Speccy taking care to post the link of the snapshot in your next post.

Go to Piriform's website, and download the free version on the left.  Click Download from Piriform.com (the FileHippo link requires an extra click). Or if you want to use a portable version of Speccy (which doesn't require installation), click the builds page link and download the portable version. You will now be asked where you want to save the file. The best place to put it is the Desktop, as it will be easy to find later.

After the file finishes downloading, you are ready to run Speccy. If you downloaded the installer, simply double-click on it and follow the prompts until installation is complete. If you downloaded the portable version, you will need to unzip it before use. Right-click the ZIP file and click Extract all. Click Next. Open up the extracted folder and double-click on Speccy.

Once inside Speccy, it will look similar to this (with your computer's specifications, of course):

post-33068-0-86653600-1480692866_thumb.j

Now, at the top, click File > Publish Snapshot.

Click Yes > then Copy to Clipboard

Now, once you are back in the forum topic you are posting in, click the ADD REPLY or REPLY TO THIS TOPIC button. Right-click in the empty space of the Reply box and click Paste. Then, click Add Reply below the Reply box.

Avast process reflects peak memory usage of 1.39GB.  This is approximately 4 times what I would expect for any installed AV.  There may be a malware problem, IMO.

Malwarebytes reflects peak memory usage of 1.42GB.  This is approximately 5 times what I would expect.

Process ID: 1236       User: SYSTEM      Domain: NT AUTHORITY      Path: C:\Windows\system32\svchost.exe
Memory Usage: 71 MB      Peak Memory Usage: 853 MB.

Process ID: 1156       User: SYSTEM       Domain: NT AUTHORITY       Path: C:\Windows\System32\svchost.exe
Memory Usage: 237 MB       Peak Memory Usage: 634 MB

Above Process IDs warrant investigatiion.  Typical processes normally reflect much lower peak memory usage

Reported data for your internal and external drives...seems to warrant further checking...but I would defer that until a malware check has been made on this system.

Moving topic to Am I Infected forum for malware check.

Louis.

The most accurate way to view the used and free space on a mass storage device is Disk Management.  Use this for a couple of days and see if there are increases in used space.  If you don't see any significant changes I wouldn't be worried.

Please take a screenshot of the Disk Management and post it in your topic.

How to make a screenshot and post it in your topic

1. Download and run A Thousand Words .

2. Follow the wizard to capture a screenshot.

3. Use the built-in editor to resize, edit, or re-capture your screen shot.

4. Your screen shot will be saved to your desktop when you finish the wizard.

You can post the screenshot in your next post as an attachment.

Just below the area where you write text in a post there is the Post button, to the right of this is More Reply Options.

Post2_zpsf05c0430.png

When you click on More Relpy Options  you will see Attach Files and Browse, click on Browse, this will open Pictures on your computer, click on the image you want to post, then click on Attach This File, then Add Reply.

I can manipulate a screen shot with Irfanview.

But first, where do I find Disk Management?

I found Disk Management.  It says that only 416 GB (45%) is free.

I can't account for that many files.

And I can't attach the file.

There is no "Attach Files".

I'll try again later.

But disk management agrees with what i see in "Computer".  There is a huge amount of used space that I cannot account for by adding up all my files.

Please download Treesize and install it.

You need to be using an Administrator account to run this.  You may be prompted once you start the scan to select the Admin account.

When Treesize opens click on Scan.  A menu will open with the option Local Disk (C:), select this option.

Treesize%203_zpsey3xvhve.jpg

The scan will now run.  This may take a while, be patient and allow it to finish.

When the scan is completed you will see an image similar to the one below.  Take a Screenshot of this and post it in your topic as an attachment.

I ran TreeSize.

Something called "System Volume Information" is taking up 61.1% of my hard drive!!!

I don't see it in "Windows Explorer" or in "Computer"?

Unfortunately, again, even if I click "More Reply Options" I do not see the paper clip or anything that says "Attach Files".  I do not know why this is so.

If I can find out why then I can attach the images of the TreeSize scan.

Regardless of the image, something called System Volume Information is taking up 310.6 GB, contains 291 files in 8 folders, and represents 61.1% of the hard drive.

Thank you for finding this, dc3.

Can you recommend how I could fix it?

Thank you very much.

Baabel.

I'm also open to ideas as to why I can't see the paper clip or "Attach Files"  options even when I click "More Reply Options".

Thank you again!

Argh!  Hamluis moved this topic to the Am I Infected forum.  In this forum you can't use the attachment feature I suggested.  I have not seen anything that would make me suspect that your problem is malware related.  For this reason I've requested to have this topic moved back to the Windows 7 forum.  Once this is done you will be able to post the TreeSize image in your topic.  Please do that.  You will be able to see when this topic has been moved back by looking above the title of this topic to see what forum it is currently in.  For example, at this time it states BleepingComputer.com Security Am I infected? What do I do?

As there doesn't appear to be any sign of malware, I'll now move this topic back to the Windows 7 forum.

Thank you dc3.  I thought I was losing it.  I knew I saw the paper clip and the "Attach Files" before, but you're right - they disappeared when my topic moved to "Am I Infected".

Al1000, thank you.  I'm glad to be back in the Windows 7 Forum.

Medab1, I did go search on line for information on "System Volume Information".  Where I'll need much assistance from this forum is in cutting "System Volume Information" down to a small size without destroying my system, and in preventing the file from growing again. That is where I will need much help.  I can follow instructions but I don't know all that much about independently making my way around an operating system.

So here, now attached, are the screen shots of what TreeSize found.

Any help in getting rid of this monstrosity taking over my hard drive and keeping it away will be much appreciated!
