The topic says it all. When I checked for updates today there was an optional update for Microsoft Security Essentials. I went ahead and downloaded and installed. Much to my surprise the installation failed with error code 80070002. I tried again and came up with the same result. I thought it odd because I've not had any problems with updating my Win 7x64 OS.

Thinking that some files may be corrupt, I ran sfc /scannow. There were no integrity violations found. I've read, in this forum, that some Win 7 users were experiencing problems with updating, but couldn't recall exactly what it was and I could not find it perusing through previous posts. I was wondering if anyone else has had this experience and what was the solution?

Thanks in advance for any assistance

Well, since posting this problem, I have tried a couple of things: Uninstalled and re-installed MSE..........no success. I then found this on MS website: http://www.techsupportforum.com/forums/f217/0x80070002-when-trying-to-update-microsoft-security-essentials-695979.html MSE still will not update: Definition Update for Microsoft Security Essentials - KB2310138 (Definition 1.239.797.0)

Download size: 3.3 MB

Update type: Optional

Install this update to revise the definition files that are used to detect viruses, spyware, and other potentially unwanted software. Once you have installed this item, it cannot be removed.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Try manually install the MSE definition update from below link.

@FreeBooter, thanks for the suggestion. Had not thought of doing that. However, prior to your response I thought I would try "Tweaking.com Windows Repair". I ran the program and it seems to have fixed the updating problem as I was able to successfully download and install the latest definitions.

Once again, thanks for your interest and suggestion.
