*** HijackThis (v1.99.1) log provided in the end of this post ***

Hi All,

I have just joined this forum. It seems to be a great forum and I look forward to be an active member.

4 days back I got my new ThinkPad T60. On the first look, I fell in love with it.
But, yesterday, when I installed a bundle of winamp 5.24 from winamp.com, some malicious stuff got downloaded. My norton antivirus and personal firewall client could protect it.

I noticed ToolBar888.dll and changes in the internet explorer options and new toolbar.

So I ran a full scan of norton antivirus, which gave me a list of adware.xyz... infections it could detect. It asked me to reboot my notebook and I did that.

Even after all this following malfunctions are found -

1. Internet Explorer : seems to be badly affected. I can see some of the options in View -> Toolbars are new : "Text Labels" and there is one without any name but it's always selected.
2. Not able to open Tools -> Internet Options. Nothing shows up when I do this.
3. A new toolbar got installed. I am seeing tabs like (SecurityToolbar, Scan for spyware, spam protection etc...)
4. Following exes found running -
- issearch.exe
- isnotify.exe
- ishost.exe

I created a hijackthis log. I am providing it below.
I need your advise on how to fix these issues.
Really appreciate your help bringing my T60 back to normal.

Thanks!

- Amit

Hi and welcome to Bleeping Computer! My name is Sam and I will be helping you.

Please download ComboFix and save it to your desktop.
Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
When it's done running it will produce a log for you. Please post that log in your next reply.

Important Note - Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

Failing to respond back to the person that is giving up their own time to help you not only is insensitive and disrespectful, but it guarantees that you will never receive help from me again. Please thank your helpers and there will always be help here when you need it!

Hi Sam,

Thanks for responding. A small note of thanks is there at the end of this email. Request you to please read that, too!

My notebook was infected on a long weekend. So I could not get any immediate help, but most of the infections I found were already discussed in many threads. Using these threads, I fixed the problems myself.
It was risky, but I am a Software professional and had some confidence that I can do it myself, so I took my chances.

Though things are fine now, I would really appreciate if you can verify the approach that I followed and give me some pointers where I can learn more about it. It will give me great confidence in, at least, doing some initial research about the future problems before going to the experts like you.

This is the way I fixed -

- First I scanned my PC using NortonAntiVirus, and let it fix whatever it could.
- Then I created a HijackThis log and made a list of all the entries which were found to be malicious (using google search). I found number of .dll, .exe files that were malicious.
- For each malicious file/entry, I searched for the fix on trusted forums.
- I made sure that HijackThis log of the fix and my laptop have same characteristics/entries for particular infections/issues.
- I followed the steps provided on the forum threads in correct sequence to fix each issue.
- Everytime I fixed something, I created a new HijackThis log and updated the infection list and went ahead with their fixes.
- Overall, following tools/fixes were used - Norton AntiVirus, HijackThis, ewido, Fix for Vundo, SmitFraudFix, KillBox.

Now I am using following protections -
- Mostly using Firefox browser while using internet
- Installed McAfee SiteAdvisor for Firefox.
- Secured the Internet Explorer internet zone
- Installed SpyBot. Using TeaTimer and scanning feature
- Using Ad-aware SE (Personal edition)
- Using Spyware Guard
- Using ewido (Only for the trial period)
- Scanning my laptop daily

Further -
- I am uninstalling Norton AntiVirus and Firewall. Norton is very heavy on the resources, slowing down my laptop.
- Installing AVG Anti Virus.
- I will install good and trusted Free Personal Firewall. *** Could you please suggest any? ***

*** If you have any suggestions on the tools, please let me know.

****************************

Before I end this email, I would want to thank individuals like you and forums like this one for coming forward with great help and support, fighting for those who have spent so much money on their computers and become victims of those unscrupulous people and companies who are creating and spreading viruses and malicious stuff. I think you guys are real heroes in this fight!

Hats Off!!

****************************

Thanks,

- Amit

It sounds like you did a great job!

For a good free firewall, I recommend Zone Alarm.

The only other program I would add to your current defense is Spyware Blaster.
