Sony Vaio. Windows 7 Home Premium/ SP 1. 64-bit Operating System. Firefox 52.0.1  Avast Free Antivirus 17.2.2288

Starting recently, laptop has started freezing periodically. Can't find a common situation to the various episodes.

Deleted Skype today because I thought it updating may have caused it - plus its garbage, but the computer just froze about an hour ago despite.

The small orange light on the front keeps flashing, so the hard drive is apparently working, but the keyboard does nothing - Caps Lock light doesn't go on if I push it, NumLk light the same.

Esc, Ctrl/Alt/Delete, right click mouse - nothing happens at all.

Please help.

Thank you.

As you can see from my OP, it is not BSOD's but the system locking up - losing any communication with the keyboard, while the hdd seems to keep working. Please re-read OP. Do you still want me to follow the instructions for BSOD's?

Yes, please do as you were instructed. The reports are still useful, even if you're not experiencing any BSODs.

I went thru all the setup instructions for Driver Verifier but -

Unfortunately I made a dumb mistake previously and accidentally deleted Windows Product Activation Key from  my computer so Windows believes it's not a valid copy.

Is the Driver Verifier going to give me any problems about this? E.g., will it try to verify that this is a genuine Windows 7 copy during the process?

I'd hate to get that stuff started again.

My computer has various software problems:

1) I cannot keep the Paging File from being set for anything but zero.

I think I set it to this a long time ago after reading an article that this will speed up the computer.

But now it refuses to be reset.

2) I recently lost the ability to Hibernate.

It loses all the data and says there's an error and it cannot hibernate.

Unfortunately the  Product Activation sticker on the base of the computer is mostly worn off so I don't have the complete key so I cannot do a reformat to factory or the software won't work.

Also hardware problems:

The computer has only 1 of 3 ports working and the touchpad doesn't work so using a bluetooth keyboard.

Will have to replace it eventually but hoping to get more out of it and then hoping it will be usable for a 2nd computer/backup.

I'm wondering if the hanging is related to the video card as it always eventually freezes when streaming and/or watching online video (Youtube).

Just got a message which I get fairly frequently - the screen goes black, recovers, and this message in the System Tray = "Display driver has recovered AMD driver has recovered..."[didn't copy the rest] So perhaps it is a problem with the driver (among other things)

Please turn off Driver Verifier for now. Reinstall your graphics drivers:

Thanksbwv848.

I must have already updated in the past, as the driver # the instructions say to check for after installation is already in there.

"Click the "Driver" tab and check that the driver version shown is 8.862.4.4000."

Do you want me to do it anyway - install another of the same?
