I managed to remove the Home Search Assistant using the tutorial from bleepingcomputer, and everything seems okay until I try to access a website that uses authentication or opens a second browser window (such as hotmail, comcast email, online banking). Then a blank window opens. I thought it might have to do with the shell.dll file, but I downloaded a replacement and it didn't change anything. Here's my log file:

Hi

Run HijackThis!, press Scan, and put a check mark next to all these:

R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page_bak = about:blank

These are restrictions. Leave them unchecked if these were set by you using a software like Spybot Search & Destroy, SpywareBlaster or another similar protection software, or if these were set by your system administrator.
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions present
O6 - HKCU\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Control Panel present

Close all other windows and browsers, and press the Fix Checked button.

This registry script will move this site from the trusted zone to the restricted zone

Copy the contents of the Quote Box below to Notepad.
Click File menu -> Save and name the file as move.reg
Change the Save as Type to All Files
Save this file on the desktop.

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\Domains\frame.crazywinnings.com]
"*"=dword:00000002

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\ZoneMap\Domains\frame.crazywinnings.com]
"*"=dword:00000004

Double-click on the move.reg file you saved on your desktop, and when it prompts to merge say Yes.

Reboot and post a new log please.

Read this: How did I get infected ? With steps so it does not happen again !, check your browser settings and try to access Hotmail again.

Probably because your Proxy server: ProxyServer = web-proxy:8088

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=813951
Everyday is virus day. Do you know where your recovery CDs are ?
Did you create them yet ?

Woohoo! I ran windows update, and everything seems to be working again. Not sure which patch did it exactly (the proxy server was set to web-proxy but was unchecked, so who knows?) but I'm satisfied

Thanks for your help!
